Homeland Security Continues Immigration Enforcement in Charlotte, Louisiana
Charlotte, N.C. -โ Federal immigration enforcement operationsโ are ongoing inโ Charlotte, North โCarolina, and have โexpandedโ to southeast Louisiana, โHomeland Security officials confirmed Thursday. Despite indications of a potential slowdown, Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles acknowledged the operation’s impactโ on the community.
The enforcement surge, dubbed “Swamp Sweep” in โคLouisiana, โฃbeganโฃ inโ early December and coudl involveโฃ up toโฃ 250 federal troops. Simultaneously, agents – some heavilyโ armed and operating in unmarked vehicles โฃ- have been conductingโฃ arrests in the Charlotte area andโ near Raleigh, North Carolina.
Homeland Security leaders have justified the increased enforcement in North Carolina by โคciting โคlocal “sanctuary policies” that limit cooperation with immigration agents. The โขcrackdown in Charlotte has faced resistance,โค including protests with approximately 100 people gathering outside a Home Depot where agents โคwere observed.
The operations have created a palpable sense of fear withinโ Charlotte’sโ immigrant communities, leading to โdecreased school attendance andโ temporary closures of businesses as โฃresidents avoid potential encounters with โฃfederal agents. One laundromat owner reported customers abandoning laundry mid-cycle upon the arrival of agents in nearby stores.
Nationwide, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detentionโ counts have reached record highs, exceeding 60,000 individuals as โof this reporting. Beyond โฃCharlotte and โคLouisiana, increased enforcement activity has been reportedโ in cities like Portland, Oregon, where over 560 arrests were โmade inโข October.
“I’m relieved for our community andโ the residents, businesses, โขand allโ those who were targeted and impacted byโ thisโ intrusion,” Mayor lyles stated on X. “As we โคmove forward, itโฃ is essential that we come together-not as separate groups โdivided by recent events, but as one โฃCharlotte community.”
North Carolina Republican โคParty spokesperson Matt Mercer characterized theโ crackdown as aโค success.
