Jack Hughes OT Goal Wins USA 2026 Olympic Hockey Gold | Team USA Hockey

MILAN – Jack Hughes scored at 1:41 of overtime, securing a 2-1 victory for the United States over Canada in the gold medal game of the men’s hockey tournament at the 2026 Olympic Winter Games, held at Santaguilia Arena on Sunday.

The goal, a wrist shot past Canadian goaltender Jordan Binnington after a turnover forced by Zach Werenski, delivered the Americans their first Olympic gold medal in men’s hockey since the “Miracle on Ice” at the 1980 Lake Placid Games. It marked a dramatic end to a tightly contested championship game, described as “thrilling, intense, and superbly played” by observers.

Hughes, visibly emotional after the win, spoke through a bloodied mouth and missing teeth, a testament to the physical nature of the contest. “Unbelievable game, unreal game by our team,” he said. “Ballsy, gutsy win. That’s American Hockey right there. That’s a great Canadian team, but we’re USA. We’re so proud to be Americans.”

The United States took an early lead in the first period with a goal from Matt Boldy. Canada responded in the second period with a goal from Cale Makar, tying the score and setting the stage for a tense third period and overtime. Both teams had opportunities to break the deadlock in regulation, including a four-minute power play for the U.S. And a subsequent power play for Canada, but neither team could capitalize.

U.S. Goaltender Connor Hellebuyck was instrumental in the victory, stopping 41 of the 42 shots he faced, including a crucial breakaway save on Connor McDavid and a desperation save against Devon Toews. “Hellebuyck, he was our best player tonight, by mile,” Hughes acknowledged. “USA Hockey brotherhood means so much. Seem at these guys. We’re such a team.”

The Canadian team was without Sidney Crosby, who missed the game due to an injury. Jordan Binnington made 26 saves in the loss for Canada, who were seeking their third consecutive Olympic gold medal in men’s hockey.

What we have is the third Olympic gold medal for the United States in men’s hockey, following victories in 1960 and 1980. Team USA previously won in overtime against Sweden in the quarterfinals of the 2026 tournament.
