Mathieu van der Poel Continues Impressive Winning Streak in Cyclo-Cross, Fem van Empel Dominates Dutch Podium in Koksijde

Mathieu van der Poel has continued his impressive winning streak in cyclo-cross. The Dutchman kept Wout van Aert far behind him in Koksijde on Thursday. Among the women, Fem van Empel was in a class of her own.

Van der Poel allowed Van Aert to follow his track in the West Flemish dunes for half a lap. Then the Dutch all-rounder placed his famous acceleration and the race was already over.

At the finish, Van der Poel had a minute and nineteen seconds lead over compatriot Pim Ronhaar, who turned out to be the toughest of the opposition. Van Aert finished third shortly after. Tom Pidcock was missing from Koksijde due to illness.

There is no limit for Van der Poel this cyclo-cross season. The world champion doesn’t care what surface he rides on or which competitors are at the start. He was by far the best all nine times he participated.

This was accompanied by an incident in Hulst on Saturday. Van der Poel spat at spectators who misbehaved, which made the sport look at itself. The race in Koksijde went without any significant unkindness.

Van der Poel ends his busy holiday period on Sunday with a cyclocross in Zonhoven. His next and final clash with Van Aert is scheduled for January 21 in Benidorm. The World Cup in Tábor is on February 4.

Battered Van Empel leads the Dutch podium

Van Empel arrived in Koksijde battered, after her fall in the cross in Baal on Monday. The 21-year-old Dutch woman won that match, but afterwards received several stitches in her damaged knee.

It didn’t bother Van Empel for a moment in the Belgian coastal town. The world champion quickly pulled away from her competitors and took a lead of more than twenty seconds within one lap.

The superior Brabant woman extended that lead in the course of the cross, to a difference of forty seconds on number two Lucinda Brand and number three Ceylin del Carmen Alvarado.

The two fought an interesting battle just before the finish, after Brand had given away a significant lead. Del Carmen Alvarado almost overtook Brand, but fell just short.

Van Empel showed in Koksijde that she has regained her top form. Last week she was surprisingly defeated in Hulst and Gavere, partly due to a cold and knee problems. She now has fourteen cross victories this season.

Cyclo-Cross Champions Wout van Aert and Mathieu van der Poel Discuss X2O Trophy Koksijde Course Difficulty and Fan Behavior Measures

Video The course of the X2O Trophy Koksijde is particularly difficult, Wout van Aert said before the start of the ‘Duinencross’. Mathieu van der Poel agrees. “That’s always a bit of a shame for a sand cross,” he continued MVDP in conversation with, among others CyclingFlits.

“It is not too heavy, but it is more fun if the sand is crucial, and not the intermediate sections that are now more muddy,” said Van der Poel, who was hit hard by Van Aert in Koksijde last year. However, this cyclo-cross season the Dutchman rules. What is the biggest difference from then? “Especially the back that no longer plays tricks on me. And yet perhaps Wout is a bit worse than last year because he opts for a different approach, which is also understandable. It will be a combination of those two things.”

Van der Poel does not have a plan for the cross in Koksijde. “You don’t need a plan here. It’s so difficult here. Normally you could recover a little between the sand sections, but the rain also stopped that, which makes it a very difficult race.”

Supporters’ measure in Koksijde
After the spitting incident in the Hulst World Cup, where Mathieu van der Poel was booed and spat at the booers, the organization of the Duinencross took a measure to prevent unsportsmanlike fan behavior. After exploring the course in Koksijde, riders can point out rioters along the course to the police. Has Van der Poel spotted annoying spectators?

“No, but that is always very limited. And shouting – which I also do not condone – is of course also different from throwing things. It’s not that bad, but it’s good that attention is being paid to it. It’s not just me, there are other riders who have complained about it. It’s good that there is some control.”

Top Cyclo-Cross Performers Share How They Celebrate the Holidays Amid Busy Racing Schedule

The busiest cyclo-cross week coincides with the holidays every year. Cross on December 22, 23, 26, 27, 28, 29 and 30, which makes it not easy for the top performers to celebrate Christmas exuberantly with family and friends. CyclingFlits posed the question to the top 3 of the World Cup in Antwerp.

“As usual, I keep it quite calm,” Wout van Aert laughs. “It is of course an annual custom to cross on Boxing Day. On the other hand, it is also a valid excuse to go home on time.”

Mathieu van der Poel also makes time for his loved ones. “To celebrate? Not really. Just have something to eat with the family and in-laws. You shouldn’t expect anything special. Does everything I eat necessarily have to be healthy? No, that is not very important at the moment.”

Eli Iserbyt, who puts all the focus on the cross, sees it differently. “I celebrate with company, not necessarily with staying up late or special food. It remains fairly calm. It’s important to just stay focused. We can still celebrate Christmas at the end of February (laughs).”

Interview: Mathieu van der Poel Impresses in Return to Cyclo-Cross – Expert Reactions and Analysis

Interview Mathieu van der Poel impressed last Saturday when he returned to the field. The world champion left nothing to chance in Herentals and immediately blasted away in the opening round. It looked impressive, but how did a number of insiders of the cyclo-cross world experience Van der Poel’s level? CyclingFlits figured it out.

We start with Lars van der Haar, who could see up close how Van der Poel attacked. “I didn’t expect that first round from him. You’re from Spain and you haven’t ridden a cross yet. To be able to achieve such a high level in a first round is just so impressive. I really didn’t expect that and perhaps I have never seen him like that before. That was really of a high level.”

“Everyone was in their frame at that moment. I had hoped that he still had to find the right feeling in the first two rounds. That would have been better for me too, because now I couldn’t get a meter closer and Eli (Iserbyt, ed.) could take the bonus seconds (for the classification of the X20 Trophy, ed.). This was exactly what I didn’t want,” laughs Van der Haar.

The Dutch champion was impressed by Van der Poel’s opening round, but also emphasizes that his victory is no surprise. “We know how good Mathieu is and we know he will win. That’s just how it is.” Eric Braes, team leader of Van der Haar at Baloise Trek Lions, joins his rider. “I especially noticed that Mathieu immediately started forcing and set a very high pace. That was really impressive.”

‘This is his playground’
“Eli wanted to follow behind Mathieu at first, but he soon realized that was not possible. As a result, the pace quickly dropped in the chasing group, making Mathieu’s lead immediately large. That may have given a distorted picture. The rest quickly accepted the dominance, which is perhaps logical.”

Just like Van der Haar, Braes is not surprised by Van der Poel’s level. “He is simply a phenomenon in all areas. So no, I’m not really surprised when it comes to Mathieu. I think the fact that he went so fast that first round has to do with his personality. This is what he likes to do, the cross is a playground for him. He also has the quality to be there straight away, something that almost all other riders do not have.”

Vanthourenhout: “Nothing new”
Finally, we ask what Sven Vanthourenhout, the national coach of the Belgians, thought of Van der Poel’s level. “I only saw the first round, but that was actually more than enough. For me, that was in line with what most of the peloton had expected. I personally wasn’t shocked by his level. You just felt that he was going to start at a high level.”

“So I’m not surprised. In the meantime, this isn’t new anymore, is it? We know how good Mathieu is, it is already the umpteenth year that he has done this. Every year there is an insinuation somewhere that ‘the rest will lean closer to Mathieu van der Poel, Wout van Aert and Tom Pidcock’, but that has been completely swept off the table in Herentals. This happens every year and so nothing is new.”

Peter Sagan and Mathieu van der Poel: Olympic Hopes Dashed in Mountain Biking World Cup

The day before the start, it was a big halo, but the development of the race showed where the truth is. In the mountain biking community, the prevailing opinion is that justice has been – at least partially – served.

Mathieu van der Poel and Peter Sagan, the star riders fighting for an Olympic place in mountain biking at the WC in Glasgow, burned out in the field.

The reigning world champion on the road lasted only three minutes on the track. After a painful fall, he picked up the loss, but also suffered injuries and withdrew from the race.

“I don’t even know what to say. I fell on the same side as during the road race, it hurts quite a bit. I’m angry with myself, it was only my fault,” responded the disappointed Dutchman.

Sagan held on bravely, fought as hard as he could, but he saw for himself what he already suspected before the championship.

After completing the last Tour de France in his career, he had only three weeks left to train in the field. As the elite race showed, it was very little.

The three-time world champion was not enough for the cross country specialists and ended up in the field of losers in 63rd place.

“It started quickly, gradually it got faster, it was hard for me to breathe. But in the end well, I finished the course, without injury. At least I tried after a long time what it’s like to race competitively on a burner,” Sagan evaluated his appearance to the RTVS camera.

Neither he nor van der Poel was helped by the controversial decision of the heads of world cycling from the UCI, who at the last minute, as part of an “effort to increase the attractiveness of the competition”, moved both from the last to the 5th row at the cross country start.

The later winner Tom Pidcock also moved up, although the Briton is a slightly different category than the Dutchman with the Slovak.

A member of the Ineos – Grenadiers road team, he is an Olympic champion in mountain biking from Tokyo, completed the World Cup race in the Czech Republic and had points earned in the cross country ranking.

Nevertheless, he also benefited from the situation. He was supposed to be 61st at the start, Sagan with van der Poel 104th and 105th. After the UCI intervened, the trio started from 33rd, 34th and 35th.

Raymond Poulidor Tribute: Tour de France Stage 9 Special Bicycle Auction for Charity

The 9th stage of the Tour de France, to the Puy de Dôme, was all about the late Raymond Poulidor. To honor his grandfather, Mathieu van der Poel rode that stage on a special bicycle, with all kinds of references to Poupou on it.

Vive le Vélo was then allowed to “auction” that bike for charity. Anyone who sent 1 text message to 4342 with the text “Merci Poupou” not only gave 1 euro (in full) to Kom op tegen Kanker, but also had a chance to win the bicycle in question.

Presenter Karl Vannieuwkerke was allowed to make one person happy on the final day. Frieda Feijaerts was drawn from the 225,798 entries. “Wow, I’m very happy,” she replied almost upset. “We will have to organize a raffle here in the family to see who gets the bike.”

But the real winner is of course Kom op tegen Kanker, which received 225,798 euros thanks to the campaign. What is symbolic on the day of the death of Martine Tanghe, herself a victim of the disease.
