Cuba Launches Clinical Trial forโ Chikungunya Treatment Amidst Escalating Health Crisis
Havana, Cuba – Cuban โขhealth authorities will initiate a โclinical study in the coming days to assess the effectiveness of โคthe domestically-produced drug Juzvinza in treating patientsโ experiencing lasting effects from chikungunya virus infection, the Ministryโฃ of Public Health (Minsap) announced on its official website.
The trial, part of Cuba’s nationalโค health innovation system, will โbe conducted across fourโฃ hospitals inโ Havana and Matanzas provinces. Researchersโ aim to improve treatment for persistentโข joint inflammation โfollowing chikungunya infection.
Juzvinza, developed by theโค Center for โฃgenetic Engineering and Biotechnology โฃ(CIGB), was initially promoted in โ2020 as a therapeutic option for critically โคand gravely ill coronavirus โpatients, intended to control hyperinflammation, regulate immuneโค response, โand reduce mortalityโ risk.
the declaration arrives as Cuba grapplesโฃ with a severe health crisis โfueled by a surgeโ in mosquito-borne diseases, including dengue and chikungunya. Hospitals are reportedly overwhelmed, and a notable shortage of โฃmedicines is impacting patient care, prompting growing public complaints regarding access to โtreatment, deteriorating facilities, and concernsโค over fumigation campaign efficacy.
Dr. Ileana Morales Suรกrez,Director of Science and Technological Innovationโฃ at Minsap, stated that research efforts are focused on โคcombating mosquito โinfestation rates, refining clinical treatments, and mitigating the consequences of the virus.
Marรญa Guadalupe Guzmรกn Tirado, Research Director at theโข Pedro Kourรญ โฃInstitute (IPK), attributed the rise inโฃ infections toโ low population immunity and the current high levels of virus circulation within โthe country.
Despite โขMinsap framing the research โขas a scientific advancement,โ reportsโ indicate a healthcare system strained by limited resources and exhausted personnel, increasingly reliant on citizen-led initiatives โคfor preventionโ andโข treatment.
