A Century of Commerce โขand Culture: The History of โฃthe Marseille International Fair
The Marseille International Fair is celebratingโ a remarkable milestone:โ its 100th anniversary. This cornerstone event for the South of France has evolved over โขthe decades, reflecting the โขregion’s economic and social shifts while remaining a โคvital showcaseโฃ for innovation and local expertise.
The story begins โขwith Chanot Park, the fair’s long-standing home. Developed at the start of the 20th century to โhost the 1906 colonial exhibition, the park quickly established itself as a โprime location for exhibitions and โcongresses. It was here, โin 1925, that the Marseille Fair held its firstโค official edition, attracting 350โ exhibitors and 75,000 visitors. Tradersโค and industrialists flocked to the event โto present theirโค latest products andโค innovations. โIts growing popularity led to its admission into theโค Union of International Fairs in 1929, solidifying its position โคas a nationally – and internationally -โข significant trade show.
The Fair’s progress wasn’t without interruption. World War II brought a halt to proceedings as Chanot Park and its buildings were successively occupied by French, German, and then American forces. This period of requisition resulted in significant damage โto the facilities and aโข suspension of the โคFair until the war’s end.
Responding to the demands of a post-war era, a new, modern palace wasโ constructed in 1951, designed to accommodate โa growing audience. Throughout the following โขyears, the Fair continued to develop, becoming a major commercial and cultural hub โfor the entire Provence-alpes-Cรดte โคd’Azur region.
However, โขthe 1983 edition was tragically marked by a bombingโ onโ September 30th, resulting in one fatality and twenty injuries. โขWhile claimed byโ various groups, the perpetrators ofโฃ the โคattack remain unidentified.
Today,โค the Marseille Fair has broadened its โscope beyond its initial industrial focus, now offering a diverse range of attractions for the general public, includingโ exhibits on housing, gastronomy, wellness, and leisure. It stands as one of France’s largest fairs, drawing hundreds of thousands of visitors and thousands of exhibitors annually.
Theโ centennial edition,โ taking place from September 26th to October 6th, 2025, will celebrate localโ creations and Marseille’s unique craftsmanship. โคTheโฃ South Region will be present โฃon the Esplanade of the Palais des Events, at Stand ES 107, to provide factsโข on youth programs like “Zouโค pass! Studies, orientation” andโ preview the upcoming “Snow Tour,” complete with virtual reality ski and toboggan experiences, curling, and a photobooth.
