Mark Stoops Expresses Gratitude Following Kentuckyโข Dismissal, Will Stein Namedโ New head Coach
LEXINGTON,โข KY – Mark โขStoops has released a statement thanking kentucky fans, players,โฃ and โstaff one day after hisโค 13-year tenure as headโ coach concluded. Stoops,โข who was fired Monday, expressed deep gratitude for his time with the program. “To all of my former players, coaches, staffers, and the โBig Blue nation, from the bottom of my heart, thank you,” stoops wrote. “Coachingโค at Kentucky the last 13 years has โbeen one of the greatest honors of โคmy โlife.I’ve felt your support, your pride, and your love every single day. Kentucky has become my home โand I’ll โbe forever grateful to have been your headโ coach.”
Hired prior to the 2013 season, Stoops was the SEC’sโค longest-tenured headโ coach before his dismissal. He finished his time at Kentucky with an overall record โฃof โฃ82-80 (38-68 in โSEC play) and lead the Wildcats to eight consecutive bowl game appearances from 2016-2023, becoming the program’s all-time winningestโ headโค coach. However, the program struggled in the past twoโค seasons, posting โฃa 9-15โ record and failingโค to reach postseason play. A late-seasonโข collapse, including defeats to vanderbilt (45-17) and Louisville (41-0), ultimately contributed toโ the decision.
Kentucky has โขswiftly moved toโฃ fill the vacancy, โขnaming Will Stein, the former offensive coordinator at Oregon, as its new โhead coach. โขStein, a Louisville native, served as the Ducks’โ play-caller for theโ past three seasons andโ will โcontinue inโค that role through Oregon’s college Football Playoff run while transitioning toโค his new position. “Growing up in Kentucky and sitting inโ theโ stands at UK games โas a โคkid, Iโ coudl only dream of one day leading the Wildcats,” Stein stated. โฃ”This is truly a โdream come true.”
Despite recent setbacks, Stoops’ legacy at Kentucky remains critically important, solidifying his place โฃas one of the most triumphant coaches in program history.
