A French woman, identified only as Isabelle, discovered her husband had secretly accumulated over €500,000 in debt in her name, following years of him managing the family’s finances. Isabelle shared her story on the RTL radio program “Un jour, une vie” with Faustine Bollaert, detailing a betrayal that led to the loss of her home and a criminal investigation.
Isabelle recounted placing complete trust in her husband, who handled “the administrative side, loans, borrowing, bills,” according to a report on RTL’s website. The deception came to light in 2020 when she applied for a mortgage and learned she was listed with the Banque de France – France’s central bank – with approximately €700,000 in outstanding debt. She has since managed to reduce the debt to around €500,000, partially by selling her house on January 7th.
The situation escalated to the point where Isabelle was summoned by the gendarmerie (French military police) as a witness in an identity theft investigation. The program, hosted by Faustine Bollaert, regularly features individuals sharing extraordinary life experiences, according to both RTL’s program page and its podcast description on Apple Podcasts and Spotify.
Isabelle’s case highlights the vulnerability individuals face when relinquishing financial control to a partner. She now emphasizes the importance of maintaining awareness of one’s financial situation and is attempting to instill this lesson in her daughters. The RTL program description notes that “Un jour, une vie” explores themes of love, family, challenges, and unexpected turns in people’s lives.
Recent episodes of “Un jour, une vie” have featured interviews with Vlad, the leader of the Patrouille de France aerial display team, and Danielle Gain, a long-time agent to prominent French film stars, as highlighted on the program’s YouTube playlist.
