Paris- Hamas has reiterated that the release of the hostages requires a complete halt to Israel’s attacks on Gaza and the withdrawal of all occupation forces.
Senior Hamas official Sami Abu Zuhri told Reuters that the success of the Paris meeting would depend on Israel agreeing to end its offensive in the Gaza Strip.
It is unclear whether Hamas will release all or some of the 132 hostages held in Gaza since the Oct. 7 abduction. Hamas has previously demanded the release of thousands of Palestinians in Israeli prisons.
A Palestinian official close to the mediation talks said Israel must agree to end its offensive and withdraw from Gaza if it is to sign a follow-up to the November accord that freed 105 hostages. .
The official also said that Qatar, Egypt and the United States have to ratify the deal. CIA Director Bill Burns discussed the outlines of a two-month cease-fire agreement. The CIA director held discussions with the head of the Mossad intelligence agency, Qatari Prime Minister Mohammad bin Abdulrahman Al Thani and Egyptian intelligence chief Abbas Kamal.

Controversy in Belgian Pro Football League: Video Review Gone Awry Leads to Replay of Anderlecht vs. Genk Match

BRUSSELS – Video review has gone awry in the Belgian Pro Football League. Then the match between Anterlet and Genk will be played again. The decision was made by the Professional Football Disciplinary Committee after Genk appealed.
Genk lost 1-2 in the match on December 23. The reason for the controversy was that the goal won by Genk was denied by the referee following the video review. Anderlecht goalie Kasper Schmeichel’s shot was deflected by Yeira Sour after Brian Heinens’ penalty came back goalless. Replays showed that Sour was inside the penalty area when the penalty was taken. And the referee did not take into account that two Anderlet players were in the penalty box. Genk argued that this was a misinterpretation of the law.
Genk is fifth in the Belgian league. Anterlet is in second place.

England Cricket Team Faces Visa Issue with Off-Spinner Shuaib Bashir for India Test Series

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com January 24, 2024

NEW DELHI – England will play without Somerset off-spinner Shuaib Bashir in the first cricket Test against India. Born in Surrey, England to parents who immigrated from Pakistan, Basheer is yet to get an Indian visa. The England team returned to India after the camp in Abu Dhabi. The 20-year-old was waiting for a visa in Abu Dhabi. But Bashir was instructed to return to England and resolve the visa issue. Bashir has been told to go to the Indian High Commission in London.
Captain Ben Stokes expressed his displeasure that Bashir had to deal with such a situation on his England Test debut. He is a little boy and I am devastated. We announced the team in mid-December. But the visa was not received at the last minute – Stokes said. A British government spokesperson disclosed that the issue has been reported to the central government. The government’s position is that all British citizens should be treated with dignity, the spokesperson said.
During the World Cup held in India, Indian visas were delayed for Pakistanis and people of Pakistani origin. Then the Pakistan Cricket Board filed a complaint with the ICC. Last year, the Australian team arrived without Usman Khawaja, who was delayed in getting his visa.
The remaining 14-player team has been in Hyderabad for a week after completing the camp in Abu Dhabi. Even in Abu Dhabi, middle-order batsman Harry Brooke had returned home due to personal reasons. Brooke is not coming back. Dan Lawrence has been included in the team instead. The first match of the five-Test series begins in Hyderabad on Thursday.
The England Cricket Board had requested the BCCI and the central government to complete Basheer’s visa process as soon as possible. England coach Brendon McCullum expressed his belief that Basheer will arrive soon.
The England coach had said that Basheer would get the news of visa approval within a few hours. The 20-year-old, who had only 10 first-class wickets at a whopping average of 67 runs, was a surprise pick for England. Basheer’s performance in the UAE for England’s second tier, the England Lions, has been in his favour. The England team management feels that Basheer’s high release point and good turn will make him dangerous on Indian pitches.

Saudi Arabia Implements Restrictions on Importation of Drinks and Goods to Embassies from Non-Muslim Countries

written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

RIYADH – In Saudi Arabia, restrictions on the importation of drinks and some other special goods to embassies from non-Muslim countries are being restricted, a local newspaper reported. Restrictions are imposed because import permits are widely exploited. It will be effective from today (January 22).
As part of the protection of diplomatic baggage, the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations allowed the importation of certain beverages and the like from abroad. This made it possible to bring them in controlled quantities and numbers that were not subject to exploitation. But it is reported to be widely exploited. The Ministry of External Affairs will inform all diplomatic offices in this regard.
The new decision is a revision of the provision that has been in effect since Saudi Arabia signed the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations in 1961. The new decision allows diplomats in embassies of non-Muslim countries to set special quotas and allow limited quantities of certain goods and beverages to be imported subject to strict regulations that are not subject to illegal exploitation.
