Tragic Death from Eating Pufferfish: Man Dies in Brazil After Consuming Deadly Fish

New York-Many of us eat fish. However, not all fish are edible. Pufferfish is such an inedible fish. A 46-year-old man named Magno Sergio Gomez of Brazil became ill after eating a pufferfish and died later. The New York Post reported that the tragic incident took place in Aracruz, Spartito Santa, Brazil. Myrian Gomez Lopez, Magno Sergio Gomez’s sister, said she never once saw her brother clean or eat a pufferfish.
Some reports say that Magno was gifted the poisonous pufferfish by an unnamed friend. The pufferfish was washed and cut by Magno and his friend. Then its liver and intestines were removed and fried in lemon juice. Then they both ate the fish. Within an hour, both expressed their discomfort. Myrian Gomez Lopez says Magno started to feel numbness in his mouth at this point. As the discomfort worsened, Magno drove himself to the hospital within eight minutes. By this time, however, the discomfort had intensified and within eight minutes he suffered a heart attack and collapsed. Reports also say that he died a few days later.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control reports that Magno was infected with tetrodotoxin, a toxin harmful to humans found in the liver and reproductive organs of pufferfish, when the carcass was autopsied. More than 1,000 times more lethal than cyanide, this toxin disrupts nerve signals to muscles. The body then loses strength, leading to paralysis and death.
After reaching the hospital, Magno collapsed and was admitted to the ICU. Magno died on January 27 after spending 35 days in the hospital’s ICU. Meanwhile, the toxicity affected the whole body and the body became weak, while the epilepsy affected the brain severely. Magno died but his friend survived. But the report also indicated that his legs were suffering from neurological problems. According to reports, the friend still has difficulty walking. Meanwhile, puffer fish is eaten in Japan. But reports also say that it was cooked after cleaning it in a special way.

Doha – Saudi Arabia was eliminated in the pre-quarters of the Asian Cup after conceding an injury-time equalizer to South Korea and losing in a shootout. South Korea will face Australia in the quarter finals. With a goal in the last seconds of regulation time, Korea extended its life into extra time (1-1). In the 9th minute of injury time, Cho Goo Sung returned the goal. Saudi took the lead in the thirty-fourth second after the break through Abdullah Radif, who came on as a substitute in the second half. Three times in the extra time, Saudi goalkeeper Ahmed Alkazar and Korean goalkeeper Hang Won Cho made brilliant saves in the last period to equalize the score.
Sami Alnajai and Abdurrahman Gharib’s kicks were saved by the Korean goalie in the shootout. Saudi’s Muhammad Kanu, Saud Abdulhamid, Korea’s Son Hyung Min, Oh Hyeong Gyu, Jo Kyo Song and Hwang Hee Chan scored (4-2).
After conceding a goal, Korea made every effort to fight back, but the Saudi defense and the second goalie Ahmed Alkazar stood firm until the last minutes and Alkazar saved the team many times. The cross bar also blocked Korea in injury time. Saudi also created a few chances on the counter-attack. A drive by Radif left the box and was saved by the Korean goalie. Korea have not been Asian Cup champions since 1964.
Abdullah Radif scored in the first minute of the second half. Radif, who came on as a substitute after the break for Salih Alshahari, broke through the defense from the kickoff and ran into the box to beat the goalie.
Both teams went scoreless in the first half. Shortly before the break, the cross bar was blocked twice in a row for Saudi. First, Salih Alshahari’s header skimmed the crossbar. The rebound was deflected by Ali Aljami and hit the crossbar. The Korean defense was in jeopardy when Saudi tried for the third time and conceded a corner.
