Bahrain MPs approve proposal to link expatriates’ CPR cards with residence visas

Bahrain MPs approve proposal to link expatriates’ CPR cards with residence visas

Manama: MPs approved the proposal to link CPR cards of expatriates with residence visas in Bahrain. This proposal was put forward by five MPs led by Jalal Khadim. The MPs demanded amendments in the Identity Card Act of 2006. MPs unanimously accepted this proposal. If the proposal is implemented, along with the visa renewal, the CPR will also have to be renewed. Ministry of Home Affairs and Information and e-Government are in favor of the proposal.

Officials said the Labor Market Regulatory Authority (LMRA) cancels the CPR whenever it cancels work permits. Non-residents also receive health, banking and other services using CPR. The Ministry of Home Affairs and Information and e-Government indicated that the move would prevent illegal residents from using these services. The National Institution of Human Rights also said that the new amendment will not be a violation of human rights.

But the Institution of Human Rights also expressed concern that such people would be denied access to essential services such as health. Yesterday, the MPs approved a new amendment regarding the provision that domestic workers, including domestic workers, will lose a part of their indemnity if they leave the workplace in violation of their contract terms. MPs are of the opinion that this will help in reducing the run away.

However, Labor Minister Jameel Humaidan, who is also the chairman of the Labor Market Regulatory Authority Board, warned that the move would be unconstitutional and discriminatory. The amendments to the Private Sector Employment Act 2012 were submitted by five MPs led by Strategic Thinking Bloc President and Bahrain Chamber Board Member Ahmed Al Saloum.
