New โขApprenticeship Transforms Stage Makeup intoโข Viable Austrian Career Path
Vienna, Austria – โขA newly established apprenticeship program is addressing aโ long-standing gap in Austrian vocational โtraining,โ offering a formalized path to becoming a โprofessional โฃstage makeup โartist. Launched in 2018, the program is proving โhighly desirable and well-received, according to evaluations from the Institute for Education Research inโข the economy.
The โapprenticeship, currently underway at the Volksoper โคVienna with trainee Carolyn Weinzettl, provides โcomplete training โฃencompassing workshop skills, crafting, and the requestโ of diverse makeup styles and โhairstyles for theatrical performances. “The ideas that sheโค spent behind the stage were โขexciting,” noted Gerd Kosour, a makeup artist at theโ Volksoper Vienna. A fellow trainee observed the โdynamic pace of work during performances as โฃa highlight of their first year.
Alexandra Heil, also at the โVolksoper, โemphasizes the programS value, stating that Weinzettl already demonstrates initiative beyond typical โapprentice expectations. “If Carolyn wantsโค to stay โatโ the Volksoper even after completing theโข apprenticeship examination, ‘she is very welcome’,” Heil said. Demand for trained makeup artists is high โคacrossโ Austrianโฃ theaters and opera companies, โensuring โstrong career prospects.
Educational researcher Stefanie Brรคumlโ confirms the program’s impact: “The apprenticeship โคintroduced โin 2018 closes a long-existing gap in Austrian vocational training. Our evaluation shows that theโ training in the professional field is very desirable and is โขwell โreceived.” Improvements have also been made to the parallel vocational โขschool curriculum since the apprenticeship’s inception.
The role demands versatility, ranging from “glamorous to aliens to ugly,” โaccording โฃto Heil, and requires a commitment to eveningโ and weekend work. โ”Manyโ think, make up a bit, andโ then Iโฃ go home,” heil โexplained. “But when the performance begins, we’re going to start.” Prospective โคcandidates are encouraged to pursue internships to gain โฃa realistic understanding of โthe profession.
