Russian Colonelโ General Oleg Makarevich‘s Alleged Role in Venezuela
Reports indicate that Russian Colonel General oleg Makarevich, identified by โคUkrainian intelligence as a leader of a โขRussian military missionโค in Venezuela, isโ involved in โฃtraining Venezuelan โฃforces in advanced military โtactics. This followsโข years โขof documented Russianโฃ military presence and activity within the country, as reported by journalist Sebastiana Barrรกez of Infobae over the โpast decade.
Barrรกez’s reporting has consistently highlighted Russian involvement in military and intelligence operationsโ inโ Venezuela, includingโ drone operations and border incursions. The Venezuelan government has not publicly addressed the presence of Russian troops โคparticipating in militaryโ activities. Evidence gathered includes reportsโ fromโข September 2019 of approximately 100 Russian citizens wearing Venezuelan military uniforms (“fidelito” green uniform) at the Militaryโ Circle of Caracas and Fuerte Tiuna, equipped with service weapons. Similar observations were made by residents along the Colombian border in Tรกchira in 2019, who identified individuals as Russian based onโฃ physical characteristics.
Further reports detail unusual military maneuvers in August 2019 in Rubio, Tรกchira, where approximately 80 russians and Cubans arrived at Fort Kinimarรญ, installing radar equipment and โantennas reportedlyโ intended to โคdisrupt telecommunications. Witnesses described these individuals โขwearing protective suits. In October 2020, Russian soldiers, again in Venezuelan uniform, participated in joint exercises โinโข the Gran Sabana, Bolรญvar state,โ near the โขBrazilian border.
A recent report by DW en Espaรฑol, citing the Ukrainian intelligence report, specifically alleges that Makarevich is leading training in advanced tactics, air defense, and โขdrone management.
Journalist Ricardo Marquina, interviewed by DW en Espaรฑol, โacknowledged the Ukrainian source but affirmed the credibility of the โฃreports regarding Russian military โcooperation and the deployment of soldiers for training. He described Makarevich as a veteran โขofโฃ the Russian-Soviet โarmy whoโข was reassigned to Venezuela following the Russian army’s setbacks in the โkherson region of Ukraine.
Political analyst Alexandra Sitenco, also speakingโ with DW en Espaรฑol, stated that Russia lacks theโ capacityโค or obligation to militarily defend Venezuela in โขthe event of US intervention, given its current โขfocus on the conflict in โUkraine andโ the absenceโ of a โขformalโ military alliance between theโ two countries.โ Though,Sitenco deemed limited support, including military โขadvice and arms โคtransfers,as plausible. She suggested Russia’s strategy involvesโค ambiguity, combining political statements withโข limited actions to keep โขthe United โขStates uncertain aboutโ its objectives.
