Magog-Orford Youth Hostel to Close After โOffer to Purchase/Rentโ Presbytereโค St-Patrice is Rejected
MAGOG, QC โ- The Magog-Orfordโ youth hostelโ will be forced to closeโ its doors โon October 15thโ after its โoffer to continue operating out of โtheโ Presbytere St-Patrice was refused by the โคDioceseโข of Sherbrooke.Director Josรฉe Roy confirmed the hostelโ submitted a thorough โoffer onโค September 2nd, following three monthsโ of business planning, securing potential financing, obtaining building work submissions, โandโค gathering community support letters.
Despite this effort, Roy received notification three days later that the offer was โคrejected, alongโ with all other proposalsโ received. “We wereโ told thatโ our offer had โฃbeen analyzed and refused, and that no other offer received had been accepted,” Royโ stated. The hostel’s current agreement with the Presbytere factory โendsโข October 15th, and โthe Diocese has confirmed the hostel must vacate the premises โby that date. roy โexpressed confusion, noting the owners are seeking both sales and โคrental proposals. She added that most communication has been in writing, with โsome calls from priest รric Vaillancourt.
“Since the letter putting an end to our contract receivedโฃ in January, there have been โคseveral discussionsโข with our board of โฃdirectors, but the reason for the end of the contract has never โbeen said clearly,” Roy lamented. โข
The hostel currently pays โฃ$72,000 annually in rent. โคRoy questioned โthe rationale for the closure, stating, “There is no accepted offer, but we are still asked to โleave. There might potentially be something โฃbehind all โคthat is not told. Is there another project โขon the table?”
The Magog-Orford youth hostelโค welcomes overโข 5,000โ travelers each year and Roy expressed concern about the impact of the closure on the community. “There business goes well, the Magogoise community appreciates usโฆ Now where are they going to go?”
Currently, โขthe organization has been โคunable toโ find a suitable alternative location due to โคbuilding size and zoning restrictions. “We don’t have a plan B. We are preparing at the end of โthe inn in October,” Roy confirmed.
Theโ Platform โ has reached out to the Saint-Patrice parish factory โfor comment andโ is awaitingโ a response.
