newborn Deaths Spark โOutrage After Rat Infestation at Indianโค Hospital
BHOPAL,INDIA – Two newborn babies died at Maharajayeshvantra Hospital in โฃMadhya Pradesh,India, after suffering sepsis โคlinked to infections stemming from a rat infestation, triggering โคa swift response from authorities including teh removal ofโ a nurse supervisor and โthe suspension of two nurses. The โขincident, which unfolded over several days, has sparked public outcry and a government inquiry.
Both infants, weighing 1kg and 1.6kg respectively, were referred to the โhospital with pre-existing congenital anemia and low hemoglobin levels. Vice President Weima reported that the second baby also hadโข congenital hand deformities and had undergone โsurgery seven days prior โto his condition deteriorating. He ultimately required ventilation to โฃsurvive.
While initial reports circulated online suggested โthe deaths were directly caused by rat bites, hospital officials clarified that one infant sustained a minor injury from a mouse bite, but the primaryโ cause of death was complications from their underlyingโ congenital conditions. A large rat had been โobserved โขroaming the neonatal intensive care unit for multiple days.
The hospital initially attributed the โขrat problem to recent heavy rainfall causing water accumulation in rat burrows, and also cited patients bringing foodโข intoโข the โฃward โฃas a contributing โคfactor. Measures taken include plans to install iron nets on windows andโ a ban on outside food within the ward.
Theโข government has levied a fine of 10 โlakh Rupees (approximately HK$9,300) โฃagainst the hospital’s pest control company. Pediatric director has been warned to beโ held accountable.
Chief Minister of Madhya โPradesh Mohan Yadav stated on Thursday, “such serious dereliction of duty will not be โtolerated,” and has demanded โa thorough investigation and severe punishment for those foundโ responsible.
