Macron Criticizes US Role in israel-Gaza Conflict, Indirectly Challenges Trump’s Peace Claims
UNITED NATIONS – French President Emmanuel Macron publicly contrasted France‘s approach too the Israeli-Palestinian conflict with that of the United states, suggesting the US bears responsibility for enabling the recent escalation in Gaza due to its arms sales to Israel. Simultaneously, Macron appeared to subtly rebuke former US president Donald Trump’s self-proclaimed role as a global peacemaker and his suggestion he deserves a Nobel peace Prize.
Macron stated France’s decision to recognize a Palestinian state faced strong opposition from both the US and Israel. He emphasized the US exerted influence on Israel, but questioned the effectiveness of that influence given the ongoing conflict. “Why did he (US President) do more than us? We did not give weapons (to Israel) that allowed Gaza conflict to occur,” Macron said, implicitly linking US military aid to the intensity of the fighting. He also acknowledged Palestinian statehood would only be realized upon Israel’s recognition.
These remarks came as Trump, speaking at the 80th United Nations General Assembly session, claimed to have halted seven wars worldwide and suggested the UN had failed to achieve global peace, implying he deserved a nobel Peace Prize for his efforts. Trump criticized the UN, stating it hadn’t even tried to help resolve conflicts he claimed to have stopped, and lamented receiving only a “bad escalator and a bad teleprompter” from the association. He further asserted the UN largely issues “firm letters” without taking meaningful action.
Macron’s comments highlight growing European frustration with the US approach to the Middle East and offer a pointed counter-narrative to Trump’s self-promotion regarding international diplomacy. The diverging perspectives underscore the complex geopolitical landscape and the ongoing debate over how to achieve a lasting resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
