Healthโ Minister Padilha Outlines โPost-Pandemic โขVision for Brazil’sโฃ SUS, Cites Provisional Measure as Key to Reducing wait Times
BRASรLIA – Brazil’s โฃHealth Minister, niels Pinheiroโ Padilha, affirmed his commitment to rebuilding andโ modernizing the unified Health Systemโค (SUS) during a โrecent interview, emphasizing a shift towards direct โfederal intervention in states and โmunicipalities to addressโ critical โhealthcare access issues. Padilha highlighted โคaโค Provisional Measureโข (MP) as โinstrumentalโข in โthis effort, allowing the Ministry to actively collaborate with localโ governments and even utilize private sector โขresources to reduce waiting lists and improve โฃtransparency.
The โMinister’s vision centers โขon a more proactive role forโ the federal government, moving away from the conventional model of solely transferringโ funds to โlocal โขhealth departments. This change,Padilha explained,is akin to public-private partnerships commonly used in infrastructure projects. “I was born to seeโ people criticizingโฃ public-privateโ partnerships. I have never seen people who criticize when โaโค government partner to build a work that will not be in the budget. For this you can, andโค to take care of people cannot?” he stated, defending the program against โcriticisms that it circumvents government โฃspending limits.
The MP, which originated during the management of former โฃHealth minister Nisia Trindade, โenables โคdirect action to reduce queues and improve service deliveryโค within the SUS. โฃPadilha announced plans for a nationalโ queue query panel, aimingโค to provideโข patients with real-time updates on โขwaiting times – a long-standingโข issue of transparency. Currently, 25 of Brazil’s 27 states are already providing data for โthis initiative, facilitating targeted resource allocation.
Padilha also addressed ongoing challenges, includingโ combating โvaccine hesitancy and ensuring equitable access to care. He pledged to remain at the Ministry through theโ end of โPresident Lula’s administration, focusing on โคreducing waitโค times and strengthening publicโฃ health initiatives. The Public Health Project, supported byโข the civil association UMANE, underscores the collaborativeโข approach being adopted to achieve these โgoals. Theโ Minister noted ongoing dialogโ with parliamentarians to prioritize Ministry guidelines and the National โHealthโฃ Plan, expressing optimism about theโ advancement of key projects.
