Saint-Chély-d’Apcher, France – A new inclusive education unit (UEE) was inaugurated Tuesday at the Théophile-Roussel secondary school, marking a strengthened partnership between the school and the Montrodat Institute for Medical Education (IME). The opening, held in the school’s Ginette Kolinka hall, was formalized with a signed agreement between school administrators and representatives from the IME, an association dedicated to combating social issues.
The UEE aims to foster a cooperative learning environment that embraces diversity and provides individualized support for students with disabilities or significant learning challenges. According to officials, the initiative embodies a commitment to universal access to education, tailoring instruction to meet the unique needs of each student.
Hélène Lasternas, the proviseure (headmistress) of Théophile-Roussel, presided over the inauguration. Attendees included Xavier Marette, director of the Regional Health Agency (ARS); David Raymond, director of academic services for the Lozère Department of Education; Hugo Mourton, secretary-general of the Lozère Department’s education services; Christine Hugon, the mayor of Saint-Chély-d’Apcher; and Michel Kavaclis, director of the IME de Montrodat. Vincent Bardou represented the IME during the signing ceremony.
Currently, students from the IME de Montrodat are receiving instruction delivered by Lucie Veyreunes, a specialized teacher, assisted by aide-soignant (healthcare assistant) Frédéric Osty. Classes are held throughout the week, with students participating in the school’s regular lunch service provided by the Mas de Civergols. Transportation to and from Montrodat is provided in a specially equipped vehicle.
The establishment of the UEE builds upon existing collaborative efforts between the Théophile-Roussel school and the IME. The initiative is designed to create a fully inclusive school environment within the lycée, offering individualized support within a common framework. The three core principles guiding the UEE are universal access to education, individualized instruction, and close collaboration between educators and support staff.
The Ginette Kolinka hall at Théophile-Roussel has previously hosted significant events, including a visit from the departmental prefect in January 2024, where students engaged with the prefect on matters of civic engagement, and a presentation of a student project in June 2024.
The inauguration concluded with a reception prepared and served by the school’s kitchen staff.
