No 10 Criticises Sadiq Khan‘s โAbsenceโฃ Amidst Escalating London Tube Strikes
LONDON – Downing Street has publicly backed “fed up” โคLondoners impactedโ by ongoing tubeโฃ strikes,โค increasing pressureโ onโค Mayor Sadiq Khan too interveneโ as โฃdisruption continues. The criticism โคcomes as aโ week of industrial actionโข threatens ยฃ150 million โin lost revenue for London โbusinesses, according to the โNight Timeโข industries โAssociation.
The strikes, initiated by the Rail, Maritime and โขTransport (RMT) union, stem โขfrom a dispute over pay and conditions with Transport โขfor London (TfL).While TfL maintains it has โoffered a “fair” 3.4 per โคcent โpay rise, the RMT rejected the proposal. Train โdrivers inโค London currently โคearn an average of ยฃ71,000 annually, alongside additional benefits. A No 10 spokesperson stated, “RMT and Transport for London (TfL)โ need โto get back around the table, work together to โresolve this dispute in the interests of passengers.”
A spokesperson for โthe Mayor of London responded, stating, “Nobody wants to see strike action or disruption for Londonersโฆ โThe Mayorโฃ continues to urge the RMT and TfL to โขget around the table to resolve this matter and get the network re-open.”
The Nightโฃ Time Industries Associationโฃ highlighted theโ significant economic impact, estimating ยฃ150m in potential revenue losses. Kate Nicholls, โขchair of UKHospitality, warned that consumersโ would be forced to alter or cancel plans, โimpacting โsales, and hospitality staff โwouldโฃ face difficulties commuting. Karim fatehi, chief executive of the London Chamberโฃ of Commerce โand Industry, cautioned that the โstrikes pose a threatโ to jobs and the long-term viability of businessesโ already grappling with rising costs and taxes.
Further strikes are planned for September, โขraising concerns about prolonged โdisruption to โLondon’s transport network.
