Brandenburg Faces Runoffs in Five Mayoral Races, AfD Gains Ground
Berlin,โ Germany – Several cities across โขthe Germanโ state of brandenburg will โhead toโค runoff electionsโฃ on October 12th after โฃSunday’s municipal elections failed to produce outright winners in five keyโ mayoral races.Notably, candidates from theโข far-right โขAlternative for Germany (AfD) will be competing in three of those runoffs, signaling a potential shift in theโ political landscape โof the region.
Theโข most โฃclosely watched race will be in Eisenhรผttenstadt, a city steeped in industrial history. Foundedโค in 1950 as aโ socialist โขmodelโข town in โEast Germany, Eisenhรผttenstadt – โnowโข home to around 24,000 residents following decades of population decline -โค will see a contest between Maik โDipoldโฃ of the AfD, โwho garnered approximately 38%โ of the vote, and Markoโฃ Henkel of the Social Democratic Party (SPD), who receivedโค around 27%. โฃ No candidate secured the necesaryโ majority exceeding 50% in the initial vote, necessitating the runoff. Theโ AfD โpreviously performed strongly โin the city during February’s national elections.
Beyond Eisenhรผttenstadt, runoffs are also scheduled in:
* Kolkwitz (Spree-Neisse): Incumbent โขKarsten Schreiber (SPD) will face Birgit Paulick (self-reliant) after Schreiber secured 43.6%โฃ of โthe vote to Paulick’s 34.5%.
