SHAWNEE – A section of downtown Shawnee was closed to ⁤traffic Wednesday ⁢afternoon after ‌a two-story building collapsed next to the historic⁣ Ritz Theater. ⁣No⁢ injuries⁣ were reported.

The Shawnee Fire ⁢Department reported the collapse occurred around 4‌ p.m. The town⁤ shut down the intersection of Broadway Avenue ⁢and Main‌ Street, and ⁤the stretch ⁤of Main Street between Broadway ⁢and Beard avenues.

The building at 6 W Main Street most‍ recently housed a marijuana dispensary and previously a computer store. an ‌adjoining storefront within the collapsed building was formerly Stompin’ Sensation Studio. ‍The ‍building had been vacant for approximately three years following a fire.

An employee of the Ritz Theater told The Oklahoman the landmark appeared ‌undamaged. A Saturday concert by the‌ band Showdown has ‌been cancelled, and an engineer will inspect the theater.

Where are the best places to see the stars in Naples, Fort Myers?

Dark ‍Skies Beckon: Southwest FloridaS Premier Stargazing spots

OKEECHOBEE, FL – Escape the city ⁤glow and‌ witness the brilliance of the Milky Way. Southwest Florida offers ‌accessible ⁣destinations for stargazers, with Kissimmee Prairie⁣ Preserve leading the way as the state’s first designated Dark Sky park. As light pollution⁤ increasingly obscures the night ‍sky, preserving access to these dark havens becomes crucial for astronomical observation, astrophotography, and simply reconnecting with the cosmos.

For residents of Naples and Fort Myers seeking a celestial experience, Kissimmee Prairie Preserve presents a relatively short drive to unparalleled views. Designated by the International Dark Sky Association in 2016, the preserve actively works to minimize light pollution, offering opportunities for after-hours access to fully appreciate the night sky. This comes at a time when 80% of Americans can no longer see the Milky Way due to artificial light, according to the International Dark-Sky Association.

Located at 33104 N.W. 192nd⁤ Ave. in ⁢Okeechobee, the preserve is⁢ approximately 110 miles and a ‌2-hour, 18-minute drive from⁤ Fort Myers, and 146 miles (a 2-hour, 45-minute drive) from Naples.

Access to Kissimmee Prairie Preserve costs $4 per vehicle. While Florida State Parks generally close at sunset, special arrangements can be made ‌to gain ⁤after-hours access for stargazing.Details on obtaining this access are available on the Florida State Parks website: https://www.floridastateparks.org/learn/dark-sky-designation.

The best time to view the ⁢Milky Way in Florida is between April and September, and optimal viewing‍ conditions require moonless nights away from light pollution. Photographers can achieve stunning results with equipment like a Canon 1DX Mark II camera, a 24-70mm lens set at 24mm, an aperture⁤ of 2.8, and an ISO of 1600,⁤ using a ⁣30-second exposure.

Marines’ massive demo closes I-5, fueling Newsom–White House feud

I-5 Freeway shut Down for Marine Artillery Exercise ⁤Sparks Political Clash

CAMP PENDLETON, Calif.- A large-scale artillery exercise conducted by the U.S.Marines at Camp Pendleton on Friday‍ forced the complete closure⁢ of Interstate 5,a major transportation artery in Southern California, igniting a political dispute involving California Governor ⁣Gavin Newsom and the White House. ‌The closure, impacting tens of thousands of commuters,⁢ stemmed from ⁤a ‍scheduled live-fire ⁣exhibition involving M777 howitzer⁤ cannons firing west to east of the freeway, beginning at approximately 1:30 p.m.local time.

The Marines‍ conduct⁤ artillery exercises nearly every week, utilizing systems ranging from High ⁣Mobility Air Rocket Systems (HIMARS) to M777 howitzers, according to Capt. dreibelbis.Live-fire training occurs regularly at both the battery and small-unit ⁤levels, with large-scale exercises‍ taking place twice annually‌ at⁣ the regimental ‍level. The M777 howitzer has been in use by the ‍Marines since⁤ 2005 and has seen combat⁤ deployment, including operations in Syria.

“This amphibious demonstration is what Marines and Sailors train for every day,” Capt. Dreibelbis stated. “Weeks of purposeful planning and rehearsals ensured success at every phase of execution, ‌underscoring the Navy-Marine Corps‌ team’s ability to safely conduct ‌complex ‍amphibious operations.”

However, the⁣ freeway shutdown⁢ drew swift criticism ⁢from California Rep. Mike Levin,‌ a Democrat representing the district encompassing Camp Pendleton. In a post on social‌ media, Levin asserted that public safety and‌ the Marine Corps’ reputation were “far more⁤ important than the political agendas of J.D. Vance or Pete Hegseth,” ⁣advocating for⁤ a balance between ⁣honoring the military and ⁢ensuring community wellbeing.

San Diego County Supervisor ⁤Jim Desmond, ‌a Republican representing Camp Pendleton and surrounding ⁣areas, also voiced concerns on social media, criticizing the situation as indicative of a lack of accountability and planning. “No accountability, no ⁢planning – just finger-pointing while everyday people sit in traffic, miss work, and watch their plans fall apart,” Desmond stated.

The incident has quickly become⁤ entangled in broader political ⁣tensions, with initial reports⁣ suggesting ⁣a connection‍ to a dispute between Governor Newsom and the White‍ House regarding military readiness and resource allocation. Further details are emerging as the situation develops.

Columbus Zoo Otter Repairs Cause Temporary Exhibit Closure

Columbus Zoo Temporarily Closes Otter Exhibit after Brothers Damage Pool Sealant

POWELL, Ohio - ⁣The Columbus Zoo & Aquarium ⁢has temporarily ⁤closed its⁤ newly ⁢renovated North America Trek ⁣otter⁤ exhibit after‍ the exhibit’s three young male otters damaged the pool’s caulking, requiring repairs. The closure ⁣begins Oct. 13, and the‌ repair⁢ process is ‍expected to take approximately one month.

The otters, who arrived⁤ at ‌the Columbus Zoo in May from the Beardsley Zoo in ⁢Connecticut, began investigating the sealant used ⁢to waterproof the 8-foot pool, ultimately causing enough damage to necessitate a full replacement. Zoo officials confirmed that none of the otters ingested ⁢any of the sealant material.

“They’re three adolescent males,” said Nikki Smith, a curator for the North America Trek region. “They’re⁣ not trying ‌to wreak havoc. They⁢ are just naturally curious animals. We anticipated them doing something we just weren’t sure what. This has never happened‌ to us with otters before.”

During the repairs, the otters will⁤ be relocated to their previous habitat near ‍the cougar exhibit. ‍the process will involve draining⁢ the pool, allowing it to dry completely, installing new caulking, and applying a ⁤protective material designed ⁤to withstand underwater exposure and prevent future damage.

The $40 ⁢million North America Trek exhibit opened on June 20 after years of advancement beginning in 2021, spanning approximately eight acres. It represents the first phase of a larger renovation project, with a second ⁢phase planned to add another six acres, ⁣though a timeline for that expansion has not yet been announced.

“Yes,this is ⁢not a great outcome, but ⁤it helps us get better in our‌ design,” said zoo official ⁤Menke.

Teen Girls Dead on NYC Subway After ‘Subway Surfing’ Trend

Two ⁣Teen Girls Found Dead on NYC Subway Tracks, subway Surfing Suspected

NEW YORK – Two teenage girls were found dead on the⁢ J train tracks in Brooklyn early Saturday, adn authorities suspect they were victims of subway surfing, the hazardous practice of riding on top of moving trains. The incident has reignited concerns‍ about the⁣ escalating ⁤trend among youth and prompted renewed calls for preventative measures.

The girls, whose identities have not yet been released, were discovered near the Williamsburg station around 4:30 a.m.‍ on October 4, 2025, according to police. Investigators believe they were attempting to ⁤subway surf ‌when they fell from the train. this tragedy marks the latest in a disturbing rise of subway surfing-related deaths and injuries in New York City.

Subway surfing, while not new, gained prominence in recent years, fueled in part by social media challenges. The NYPD began tracking incidents in 2022, after officials noted the trend’s emergence. Since than, at least nine people have died consequently of the practice – six in 2024 and ⁤five in 2023, with three additional deaths reported in 2025 prior to Saturday’s incident.Hours before ‍the⁤ discovery of the girls’ bodies, a 14-year-old boy was ‌hospitalized after falling from a Manhattan-bound 7 ⁣train in Queens.

City and state officials ‍launched a public details campaign in September 2023, titled “Subway Surfing Kills − Ride Inside, Stay Alive,” to deter the dangerous behavior. New York City has also taken legal action, suing five social media companies in February 2024, alleging they contribute to harm to⁢ youth mental⁣ health and facilitate the spread of subway surfing content.the NYPD has deployed drones to monitor subway lines as part of increased surveillance efforts.

The Metropolitan ‌Transit Authority (MTA)‍ has collaborated with platforms like TikTok and ⁣Instagram to remove videos depicting subway⁢ surfing, having taken down over 1,800 videos through June 2025. Despite these‍ efforts, the dangerous trend persists. Regular announcements warning against subway surfing are broadcast throughout the subway system, and recently, Bronx-born rapper Cardi B recorded public service announcements urging riders to stay safe.

The examination into Saturday’s deaths is ongoing. Authorities are urging parents and guardians to ⁣speak with their children about the extreme dangers of subway surfing.
