EU Reaches Agreement to โEnd Russian Gas Purchases by 2027
Brussels – The European Council andโค the European Parliament have reached a landmark agreement โto โคphase out โimports of Russian natural gas, marking a significant step towards energyโ independence for theโค EU. The deal,โ announced today, sets a โคtimeline forโข ending reliance on Russian fossil โfuels, a key objective since the start of the war inโ Ukraine.
Underโค the agreement, imports of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) from Russia will cease by the end of โฃ2026. Pipeline gas imports โคwill be โฃbanned inโค a legally binding manner, beginning in autumnโ 2027.
“this is a historic day for our Union. A provisional agreement has been reached on the EU โCommissionS proposal โto phase โout Russian fossil fuels. We are opening aโ new page,” statedโฃ Europeanโข Commission President Ursula von der Leyen at a press conference in Brussels.
The move builds onโ existing efforts to diversify energy sources. According to von der Leyen, EU imports of LNG and pipeline โnatural gas from Russia have already decreased โfrom 45 percent to 13 percent. Coal imports have fallen from 51 percent to zero, and crude oil imports have โdropped from 26 percent toโฃ 2 percent.
Von der Leyen affirmed thatโ this agreement marks the beginning of Europe’s path to complete energy independence from Russia. The agreement will โขcomeโ into force following โขofficial approval by the EU Council andโ the European Parliament.
Theโ initiative is designed to protectโค the EU’s โคsupply security and contribute toโค the stability of the EU energy market.
