Liverpool vs Wolves: Ekitike Incident in Premier League Clash

Wolverhampton Wanderers defeated Liverpool 2-1 at Molineux on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, in a Premier League match marred by a late-game altercation between players from both teams. The incident occurred after Santiago Bueno of Wolves impeded Liverpool’s Hugo Ekitike, sparking a confrontation.

The drama unfolded when Bueno attempted to halt a Liverpool break by pulling back Ekitike. Ekitike then stood over Bueno as the Wolves player lay on the ground, prompting a reaction from Wolves players who surrounded the Liverpool striker. Liverpool players, including captain Virgil van Dijk, intervened to defend their teammate. The situation was eventually diffused, and Bueno received a yellow card. At the time of the clash, the score was tied 1-1, with Rodrigo Gomes having scored for Wolves and Mohamed Salah netting his first Premier League goal in four months for Liverpool.

Despite Salah’s equalizer, Wolves secured the victory with a 94th-minute goal from Andre, a result that leaves the club, currently in the bottom spot of the Premier League table, fighting to avoid relegation. Following the match, Van Dijk expressed his disappointment with Liverpool’s performance, stating, “It was slow, we were predictable, sloppy in possession and wrong decision-making.” He added, “We didn’t concede chances, but if you perform like that, then a result like this can be a result of that, and that’s a fact. It was disappointing.”

Liverpool manager Arne Slot as well acknowledged the team’s shortcomings, describing the result as “bad” and the first half performance as “far from good,” even as noting an improvement in the second half. Prior to the match, Ekitike had emphasized the importance of maintaining momentum following Liverpool’s recent run of four consecutive wins across all competitions, including a 5-2 victory over West Ham United on Saturday. He stated that the focus was not solely on the opponent, but on “the momentum” and capitalizing on the latter stages of the season to achieve their goals.

The defeat at Molineux came ahead of a second match between Liverpool and Wolves at the same venue on Friday, March 6, in the Emirates FA Cup. Ekitike had anticipated the challenges of playing Wolves away, acknowledging it would “not be easy.” Liverpool fans have also noted Ekitike’s efforts in transition play during the match, praising his ball-carrying ability and runs into the box, despite a missed opportunity created for Jeremie Frimpong.
