LIV Golf to Adopt 72-Hole format for Allโข 2026 Events
November 4, 2025 โ – LIV Golf announced today itโ will transition to a 72-hole formatโค for all regular season events beginning with theโ 2026 season, a meaningful change for โขthe controversial golf league enteringโ its fourth year. The move, โขannounced โin a press release, is intended to strengthen the league, challengeโฃ its players, andโ align with the standard format recognized globally.
“We enter โour fourth season asโฃ a league, the move to 72 holes โคmarks a pivotal new chapter for โฃLIV Golf that strengthens our league, challenges our eliteโข field of players, andโ delivers more of the world-class golf, energy,โ innovation and access that our global audience wants,” said LIV Golf โขCEO Scott O’Neil.
The change comes as LIV Golf continues its pursuit of inclusion in the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR). Currently, LIV Golf events do โขnot award OWGR points, limiting players’ opportunities โฃto earn ranking โpoints outside of major championships and eventsโ on other tours โคlike the DPโ World Tour or the Asianโ Tour. LIV Golf initially submitted an application for OWGR points in June 2022, but later withdrew it before resubmitting over โขthe summer.
“Everyone wants to see the best players in the โworld โคcompeting โagainst each โขother, especially in the majors, and for the โgood of the game, we need a path forward,” said Bryson DeChambeau โขin the league’s press release. “By moving โto 72 holes, LIV Golf isโข taking a proactive step toโ align with the historic format recognized globally. This is a fantastic evolution of the LIV golf product, showing how our League listens and adapts to create the best possible experience.”
Despiteโฃ the shift โto 72 holes, LIV โGolf will โคmaintain its signature shotgun starts and existing scoring โคsystemsโฃ for regularโค events. Details regarding โขthe format for the season-ending team championship will be announced at a later โdate.
LIV Golf also announced this week itโข will double the number of roster spots available through its qualifying pathways – the LIV Golf Promotions Event (January 8-11 at Black Diamond โRanchโข in Lecanto, Florida)โข and the Asian Tour’s International Series.โข The league’s official offseason, allowing team captainsโ to sign, release, andโ trade players โbased on 2025 standings, began this weekend.
The 2026โ LIV Golf season is scheduled toโ begin February 4 at Riyadh โGolf Club inโค Saudi Arabia.
