Trump Threatens Broadcasters with license Revocation Over Critical Coverage
WASHINGTON – Former President Donald Trumpโ has threatened to revoke the broadcast licenses of televisionโ stations offering critical coverage of him, according to a report by the BBC.The remarks came after ABC pulled an episode of โค”Jimmyโ Kimmel Live!” following pressure from a Federal โCommunications Commissionโ (FCC) official.
Trumpโ began by claiming that “networks areโข 97 percent against me, 97 percent of them are negative,” despite his victories in seven undecided states. He then stated, โ”Thayโค only offer me poor publicity. I think they got licenses. I think they might be a license to beโค taken away.”
The withdrawal of the โฃ”Jimmy kimmel Live!” episode โขfollowed threats from Brendan Carr, a commissionerโ at the FCC, โthatโ ABC could lose itsโค license. Nexstar, which distributes the program, later announced it would not broadcast the episode.
the episode in question featured host jimmy Kimmel referencing the background of theโค individual who attacked conservative commentator Charlie Kirk, noting the attacker cameโข from a “Pro-Trump Conservative โขMormon family.” Kimmel also criticized the reaction from some supportersโ of Kirk, โฃcharacterizing their expressions of regret asโข akin to a “four-year-old boy who lostโข a goldfish.”
The episode was slated to air from Los Angeles before being pulled. The incidentโข raises concerns about potential government interference in free press and the FCC’s role in regulating broadcast content.
