Germany is embarking on an ambitious project to establish its own independent satellite communication network, aiming to rival commercial providers like Elon Musk’s Starlink. This initiative is driven by the Bundeswehr‘s need for enhanced global coverage and secure communication capabilities, especially within the NATO framework.
The current Bundeswehr satellite network, known as satcombw, is deemed insufficient for modern warfare and national defense due to its limited coverage. To address this, Germany plans to deploy approximately 300 small satellites over several years, with the initial network projected to be operational by 2029.This endeavor, estimated to cost several billion euros, has been facilitated by recent exemptions in German budget rules concerning defense spending.
The growth of this independent satellite system is expected to provide significant advantages for the Bundeswehr. Commanders will gain access to real-time aerial imagery on the battlefield, enabling more informed and effective decision-making. Further expansions of the network are planned following the initial deployment.
