Lansing Man on โTrial โคfor Double Homicide Stemming from Tumultuous โขRelationship
LANSING, MIโฃ – September 18, 2025 โ – The trial ofโ Dennis Whaley continued Thursday in Ingham County Circuit court, revealing a history ofโฃ conflict and alleged abuse leading up to theโข April โค18, 2024, shootings that left Christine Cambric and Jasonโ McKenzie โขdead. Whaley is accused of murdering Cambric and McKenzie at a Woodrow Avenue โhome in Lansing.
Testimony โคpainted a picture ofโ a “toxic” and on-again,โฃ off-again relationship between Whaley and Cambric, with witnesses stating โคCambric desired Whaley to move out. Clayโ Roark-Scharf,โข the boyfriend of another resident of the home, described the relationship as involving “a lot of fighting and โฃnot โa lot of trust.”
Court โrecords show Lansing police were called to the residence in November 2023 โfollowing an argument over bills. โคCambric โฃreported to officers that Whaley โkicked โher four times โand, days prior, pushed her โฃout โof bed,โค possibly fracturing her shoulder. An arrest warrant was issued for Whaley in January 2024, but was not served before the fatal shootings three โขmonths โขlater.
Whaleyโฃ was โขapprehended days after the shooting after contactingโข a detective and arranging his surrender. Police recovered the assault-style rifle used in โฃthe โshootings near a homeless encampment, โbased on information provided by Whaley.
Roark-Scharfโ testified โhe wasโ upstairs โขwhen he heard shouting and then gunshots from the โbasement. He armed himself and hid, instructing his girlfriend, Adkins, to call 911 and stay away from the house. Adkins, โwho was in a friend’s car at the โฃtime, testified she saw Whaley leaving โคthe homeโ and described his expression as “crazy,” with “evil in his eyes.”
The trial before Judge Wanda Stokesโค isโข expected to conclude โขnext week.
