Afghan Boy’s wheel-Well Flight Shocksโ Aviation Experts at โDelhi’s IGIโ Airport
New Delhiโข – Aviation experts expressed shock at โฃthe survival of an Afghanโฃ boy, identified only as Faizal, who travelled for โ90 minutes hidden in the wheel-well of aโข Kam โขAir flight landing at Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airportโ on โฃNovember 26th. The incident, a highly dangerous and frequently enough fatal undertaking, has prompted โscrutiny of security protocols.
The Kam Air flight RQ 4401 touched โคdown at IGI at 10:20 am. Approximately 20 minutes later, an airlineโค security officer discovered Faizal โขwandering barefoot โon theโ apron, โvisibly distressed โwithโ dusty clothes and blistered feet. He โคpossessed only a โfew medicines. by 11:10 am, โคthe Security Operations Control Centre was alerted and theโฃ boy was taken to the arrival deportee room, according โขto an official familiar with โthe situation.
Unable โขtoโข communicate in English or Hindi, airport officials enlisted the help of the Afghan crew aboard the aircraft โto translate. They learned Faizal was from Kunduzโ and had gained access to Kabul airport by following passengersโ closely. He โฃthen climbed into the โcentral โขlanding gear compartment and secured himself inside.
During questioning, facilitated by the crew, Faizal describedโ the harrowingโ conditions of his journey. He recounted how the heat from the tiresโข melted โhis shoes during takeoff andโฃ how he used his pheran (a customary Afghan cloak) and jacket to shield himself fromโฃ the freezing temperatures at 30,000 โfeet, believing residual โtire heat aided his survival. A small red Bluetooth speakerโ was also found in the landing gear bay, belonging โto the boy.
The โdiscovery triggered aโค coordinated response involving Immigration, the Bureau of Civil Aviation Securityโค (BCAS), the Intelligence Bureau (IB), and airport โคoperator DIAL. Senior officials in the Union ministries of โhome affairs and โexternal affairs were immediatly informed, and Afghan authorities wereโค contacted to verify Faizal’s identity.
After nearly โขthree hours of verification, afghan officials confirmed hisโค details.โข Arrangements were swiftly made for his repatriation. At 4:00 pm, faizal โwas placed onโ the same Kam โฃAir jet, RQ 4402, but this timeโค as a passenger, and flown back โคto Kabul on the same day.
Aviation experts have noted Faizal’s โsurvival is unusual, โฃthough โnot entirelyโค unprecedented. Former pilot Captain Sharath Panickerโ explained, “It has โขbeen done โbefore and can happen again. The โfuselage space aroundโฃ the landing gearโ does have space — โit includes components like fire โฃbottles and hydraulic systems. Once theโ aircraft is โairborne, the landing gearโฃ retracts into this area. But as โit’s not partโ of the pressurised cabin, theโ temperature inside keeps dropping as the โplane goes higher.”
However, the incident โunderscores โฃthe extreme risks โคinvolved. Globally, similar โattempts have frequently resulted in tragedy.โค In โขJanuary 2024, two menโข were foundโค deceased in the landing gear ofโ aโค JetBlue flight from โคthe Dominican Republic โฃto Florida. In December 2023, an Algerian youth โwas found in critical condition with severe hypothermia after flying from Oran to Paris. A Guatemalan man did survive a flightโ to Miami in 2021 after hiding in a โคwheel well for several hours.
