WNBA Faces Second Week of Courtly Disruptions as Fans Hurl Sex Toys
League Condemns “Ridiculous” and “Dangerous” Fan Behavior Amidst Growing Incidents
The WNBA is grappling with a disturbing trend as fans continue to throw sex toys onto the court during games. Following two such incidents last week, another object landed near a player on Wednesday, sparking renewed calls for fan accountability and safety.
Sparks Game Marred by Latest Toy Toss
During a game in Los Angeles between the Indiana Fever and the Sparks, a sex toy was thrown from the stands, landing near Indiana’s forward, **Sophie Cunningham**. The incident occurred with just over two minutes remaining in the second quarter. **Cunningham**, who has previously spoken out on social media about fans flinging these items, reacted with surprise. Teammate **Kelsey Plum** quickly intervened, kicking the object into the stands to prevent further disruption.
โI think it’s ridiculous, it’s dumb, it’s stupid. It’s also dangerous, and players’ safety is number one. Respecting the game. All those things. I think it’s really stupid.โ
โLynne Roberts, Sparks Coach
Both **Cunningham** and **Plum** were commended for their composure. **Plum** noted that players and officials handled the situation effectively by “playing on, don’t give it any attention.” She added appreciation for the referees who kept the game moving.
Pattern of Disruptions Across the League
This latest episode follows a concerning pattern. A week prior, an incident in Atlanta saw a fan arrested, ejected, and facing a minimum one-year ban for throwing a sex toy onto the court during a Dream game. Another similar object was removed by an official during a game in Chicago last Friday.
Social media reports indicate that green toys were also thrown during games in Phoenix and New York, though these did not reach the playing surface. Notably, one such item in New York landed near a child at Barclays Center.
