Lifetime Compensation Granted for Paralysis Following COVID-19 Vaccine in Italy

A 55-year-old man from Sicily, Italy, has been awarded a lifetime pension after suffering a near-paralysis in his arm following a COVID-19 vaccination, multiple Italian news outlets reported this week.

The man, whose name has not been widely released, received the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine. Following the vaccination, he developed a severe neurological reaction that left his arm significantly impaired. Italian courts have ruled in his favor, recognizing a direct link between the vaccine and his condition, and have authorized the lifetime indemnity.

La Verità, la Repubblica, ANSA, Secolo d’Italia, and 98zero all reported on the case, highlighting the unusual nature of the ruling and the financial implications for the Italian state. The size of the pension was not disclosed in initial reports.

Italy began its COVID-19 vaccination campaign on December 27, 2020, alongside other European Union member states. As of February 26, 2026, over 150 million doses had been administered, with approximately 49.5 million people fully vaccinated, representing over 83% of the population, according to data from Wikipedia and the Italy COVID19 Vaccine Tracker.

The Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine was among the first to be authorized for use in Italy, receiving approval from the European Commission on December 21, 2020, following a recommendation from the European Medicines Agency (EMA). As of February 2026, eleven vaccines are approved for use in Italy, including those from Moderna, Sanofi/GSK, Novavax, and Janssen (Johnson & Johnson), according to the Italy COVID19 Vaccine Tracker.

The Italian Medicines Agency (AIFA) maintains a dedicated section on its website providing information on COVID-19 vaccines. The case in Sicily raises questions about the potential for rare, severe adverse reactions to COVID-19 vaccines and the processes for compensating individuals who experience such outcomes.

The ruling comes after a period when vaccination against COVID-19 was mandatory for individuals over 50 in Italy, from February 15, 2022, to June 30, 2022. Prior to that, from October 15, 2021, to April 30, 2022, workers were required to present proof of vaccination or a negative test to access their workplaces.
