50 years of New Democracy: Background and wells from the street party of the ND – 2024-10-07 14:21:11

written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

The 50th anniversary of its foundation was celebrated by Nea Dimokratia, with a large street party that took place outside the party’s historic offices, on Rigillis Street.

The central point of the evening could not be other than the speech of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis who, among other things, said that “we honor all our leaders, present and absent”

“We remained firmly on the right side of history. Constantly facing the carnage of division and the poison of populism. We are the most resistant faction in the country” added the prime minister.

The beautiful evening helped the plans of the organizers with a crowd of people flocking long before the speech of Kyriakos Mitsotakis and filling the street in front of the historic offices of the party.

It is noteworthy, perhaps helped by the choice of street party, that the average age was considerably younger than usual at party events.

The party’s front-line executives and MPs were there early on with most of them in a good mood and chatting for quite some time in a relaxed atmosphere with the press representatives and more.

They shone through the absence of Karamanlis – Samaras

Apart from those present, however, history was also made by those who were absent. In particular, the two former prime ministers, Kostas Karamanlis and Antonis Samaras, who, although invited, chose not to attend, sending a resounding message to the current party leadership.

The wells

As expected, in the wells of the event, this action was commented on a lot, with the party officials being divided, depending on their internal party origins.

“I don’t know if ND or Potami is celebrating today,” commented an executive who is close to Antonis Samaras, referring to the multitude of executives who now belong to ND and come from the center and center-left.

After all, the opening of Kyriakos Mitsotakis to the center and the change of course on issues such as the marriage of same-sex couples has disturbed several “hard” right-wingers, who have Antonis Samaras as their point of reference.

“It is a shame especially for Karamanlis” commented another official, adding that “it is unthinkable that he does not honor the party founded by his uncle, the Nationalist”.

On the other hand, there were not a few who defended the former prime minister’s stance.

The developments in the center-left

The developments in the opposition parties were also at the center of the discussions. Here, however, there was a consensus of opinion with Piraeus executives stating that “we are playing football alone but it is starting to do us no good”.

“I don’t know what will happen to PASOK, but SYRIZA no longer exists,” emphasized a government official.

written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis bids farewell to the great music composer, Mimi Plessas, who passed away, with a post on social media.

“A leading composer, a great scientist and a sweet person has left us,” the Prime Minister noted in his post.

And he adds:
“His “Road” has been rich. Full of melodies that start from jazz and permeate Greek song, but also Greek cinema. Mimis Plessas is unique. Just as unique are the moments he will give us forever with his notes.”

See Mitsotakis’s post about Mimi Plessas

It is recalled that Lina Mendoni, Antonis Samaras and Kyriakos Velopoulos also said goodbye to the great Mimi Plessas with their posts.

Christos Spirtzis: Kasselakis cannot articulate a political speech – ND is disintegrating – 2024-10-03 05:43:53

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com October 3, 2024
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

Party official Christos Spirtzis spoke to ERTNews and the NewsRoom show about the pre-election trajectory of SYRIZA and Stefanos Kasselakis.

No one was against Kasselakis from the beginning

Mr. Spirtzis emphasized that no one was against Stefanos Kasselakis from the beginning. “We were when he showed that he has nothing to do with the principles, the ideology, the political scope of SYRIZA and when he Kyriakos Mitsotakishe said and added:

“He was constantly creating issues of introversion, turning public opinion on issues that are not political and had to do with his personal style, his personal life, his house, Spetses or anything else and I think that was also seen in the results of the European elections ».

“I don’t like party chairs”

Mr. Spirtzis made it clear that he is not looking for the party chairs. “I have proven that I don’t like party chairs, I have resigned from the political secretariat. What matters is the country, it’s the Greek people, the problems that have become inflated.”

Any re-election Kasselakis supporter in the government

He also accused Stefanos Kasselakis of not being able to articulate a political speech and estimated that his eventual re-election would be supportive of the government of Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

“ND Disintegrates”

“We will have an official opposition party that will in fact turn the spotlight elsewhere, either internally, or on other issues that we will find walking as an opposition and at the moment we have many big issues, such as the election of the President of the Republic and a ND that is falling apart” he said and explained: “If there was a serious pole, an alternative proposal for governance in the country, the ND would have collapsed, it wouldn’t exist.”

Show with Konstantopoulou in the Parliament: The nail Mitsotakis, the irony Tasoula and the wedge Pappa – 2024-10-03 01:04:15

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com October 3, 2024
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

Tension was noted today in the Parliament during the debate on the land register. Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Zoe Konstantopoulou came into confrontation on the occasion of a report by the president of Freedom of Navigation on the Tempe accident.

An exchange of points followed, in which the Speaker of the Parliament and Nikos Pappas intervened.

It is noted that there were about 35 New Democracy MPs in the room out of a total of 156, a fact that the opposition parties pointed out in their criticism. Of the 11 blue rebels there were only 2.

The intensity

While Kyriakos Mitsotakis was on the podium, the president of Plevsis Eleftheria made a comment about the train accident in Tempe, with the prime minister answering her: “Greece, why do you want a miserable Greece to have its own land registry… it changes towards better. From our side, do what makes the daily life of the citizens easier… by voting in favor, putting forward for once the interest of the place and society”.

This report caused greater irritation in the Plenary, opening a new cycle of confrontation this time with Konstantinos Tasoula, Zoe Konstantopoulou and Nikos Pappa.

K. Tasoulas: Respect the Parliament and the KtB which you constantly violate. Mr. Pappas has the floor.

Zoe Konstantopoulou: I have also requested, Mr. President

K. Tasoulas:: You are last, because the wise Greek people ranked you last.

Nikos Pappas: It would be good to avoid such evaluations, Mr. President.

K. Tasoulas: Come and keep order yourself.

Nikos Pappas: I don’t have any such job.

K. Tasoulas: I am informing you that Mrs. Konstantopoulou asked me to speak before you, and she told me that you are wrongly asking for the floor because you have not asked for it. Do you want me to call her?… It’s not enough that I’m trying to lighten the atmosphere, you’re telling me that I’m also wrong.

The Pappa Wedge

Taking the floor, the president of the KO of SYRIZA unleashed severe criticism towards the prime minister for the ongoing fires, demanding answers.

“He spouts reasons for the land register. Is nothing happening? Is he afraid of tarnishing his image in the news if he apologizes for the Corinthia fire? An explanation for the death of a fellow human being at AT Panteleimonas?”.

Mr. Pappas, looking towards the seats of the blue MPs, most of whom had already left after Kyriakos Mitsotakis finished his speech, asked himself: “Doesn’t this attitude offend you?” The midterms were tabled yesterday… Is there no agenda of issues to explain? Is he proud or should he apologize for something?’ At the same time, he called the prime minister’s speech a “poor performance”.

“The government bears responsibility for abandoning the railway,” the prime minister said, accusing him of being the high priest of the Tempe accident cover-up. “He will not escape from these responsibilities. SYRIZA will exhaust every parliamentary means for the truth of your deeds to come to light. We have filed a pre-day debate on the issue of civil protection. At the same time, we want detailed information on national issues, as according to Turkish officials and the Turkish president, there are developments”.

SYRIZA Elections: Everyone’s Opponent Mitsotakis and the Kasselakis Interview – 2024-10-02 10:21:35

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com October 2, 2024
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

As of today Tuesday, the candidates for the presidency of SYRIZA increased to five. Nikolas Faradouris’ decision to claim the leadership of the faction did not fall from the sky. The Kefalonian MEP had premeditated his intentions and simply let time work for him, as it allowed him to measure reactions and reach conclusions.

For the professor of international law, the result of the ballot box is of minor importance, as he typically mentioned to people in his environment. Whether he is elected or receives 2%, he will continue the mission assigned to him unscathed without second thoughts. He himself will be there and then.

He cares about the stakes of the whole process. SYRIZA should be rechristened, come out strengthened and reposition itself politically, because “this is what our base demands, this is what society demands”.

Faradouris set the tone

Perhaps it is not coincidental that Nick. Faradouri chose October 1 to communicate his intention to participate “with a sense of responsibility and faith in values” in this battle. The second month of autumn is traditionally the month of sowing, the one that waters the soil and allows the first roots to emerge.

The Kefalonian politician spoke of “respect and love for all my fellow candidates”. Nor does he intend to subsequently raise his voice, exceeding the limits of internal party culture. It would be against what he stands for as a man, but also against the decision of the Central Committee to avoid offensive or toxic reports against other officials – let alone presidential candidates.

Mitsotakis is the main target of all the candidates

In general, at this early stage of the campaign of those who claim the leadership of SYRIZA, the core is common and united. This is the New Democracy government personified by its head, Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

The intention of each to appear as the rival awe of the Greek prime minister is evident, producing opposition and convincing that he has the special weight to lead the effort to overthrow him. Why not defeat him already with or without alliances.

Pavlos Polakis started a few days ago in Chania, talking about the self-interested tactics of the ND. Stefanos Kasselakis followed with his statements about the great fire in Corinth, accusing the government of sidelining civil protection. At the same time, he unfolded his proposals.

Sokratis Famellos took over on Tuesday from Zografou. During his presence at a municipality event on the occasion of the International Day of the Third Age, and after first becoming the recipient of the dissatisfaction that prevails towards the government regarding health and pensions, he referred to the need for “a strong social state” which – according to same- has been discredited by the ND.

Nomination and interview by Kasselakis

In Koumoundourou, they are struggling to keep their voices down, because the full seven weeks between the first round of the presidential elections are enough, and an image of total disunity would only be harmful. All this painstaking effort was also reflected in the KO meeting.

Accordingly will be the style of the candidates in all their subsequent public appearances – on television or on the street. At least until the occasion is given for something different that will reactivate the “civil” climate of the previous days.

The fact that Stefanos Kasselakis has – before formalizing his candidacy – scheduled a televised interview with Nikos Hatzinikolaou, at midnight on Thursday, has not gone unnoticed. It is natural to be commented on by various circles, positive or negative. Certainly, by then he will have addressed his message to the voters of SYRIZA, updating through social media the repeated “I am here”.

Both in one case (announcement of candidacy) and in the other case (Enopios Enopio) the interest in the content of what he will say is very lively. Every word the ousted president will use has its meaning, although – after advice and admonitions from associates – he seems to have adopted a profile more compatible with the instruments of SYRIZA.

The Central Committee is coming

Of course, the fact that the new meeting of the Central Committee of SYRIZA is coming up on Saturday (5/10) raises the temperature out of nowhere. Although this is a meeting concerning the pre-conference dialogues, it is quite possible that the version of the reinstatement of the proposal (Hatzisocratis) to separate the elections for the presidency from those for the new KE is quite possible. In this version, the objections to violation of the statute will be very strong from the Kasselakis bloc – just like last time, which was eventually withdrawn.

However, the majority in the upper body belongs to the enlarged bloc of 87, so this determines the outcome in the event of a vote.

Kyriakos Mitsotakis on Cyprus: “A two-state solution cannot be accepted” – 2024-09-30 01:07:26

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com September 30, 2024
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

Kyriakos Mitsotakis spoke at the 79th Session of the UN General Assembly in New York. The Greek Prime Minister mentioned, among other things, the efforts being made for a ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah, the war in Ukraine, Greek-Turkish relations and the Cyprus issue.

“This is the first time I am here as the leader of a country that is an upcoming member of the UN Security Council” was the initial position of Kyriakos Mitsotakis who added: “Our world is becoming less and less safe. In the midst of threats there are opportunities to cooperate on a global scale… Since 1946 the Security Council has not seen significant reform. Today it cannot solve the complex problems of the present and the future”.

He then spoke about the effort being made for a ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah. “Greece will do everything it can to influence stability. A year ago we did not know that the terrorist attack of October 7 (in Israel) would take place. Violence in the Middle East is causing civilians to suffer in Gaza. Greece calls on those with influence to step back from this cycle of violence and for everyone to engage in de-escalation dialogue. Greece supports the 21-day ceasefire… There must be a return of the hostages to Gaza.”

“The occupation of Cyprus is a violation of the principles of the European Charter”

During his speech, Kyriakos Mitsotakis was quick to respond to Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The Greek Prime Minister initially emphasized: “I have met the President of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, a total of six times. There is a prospect for alleviating any tension. Our only difference is the definition of the continental shelf and the EEZ in the Aegean”.

He then referred to the Cyprus issue, pointing out that he does not see any intention for dialogue on the part of Turkey for dialogue on the specific issues and stressed that “The occupation of Cyprus is a violation of the principles of the European Charter. We want a bizonal federation solution with one legal entity. The two-state solution will not be accepted. It’s not a solution. We call on Turkey to return to negotiations for a fair and sustainable solution”

Then he also spoke about the situation in the Western Balkans, stressing: “Greece has always had a vision to reduce conflicts. 21 years after the Thessaloniki agenda, political leaders must act to embrace the future. The revival of nationalisms has no place today. International agreements must be respected, such as the Prespa Agreement. Remember Churchill’s words: The Balkans produce more history than they can handle”.

The Prime Minister also referred to the challenges from the use of Artificial Intelligence and social networking platforms, especially in the mental health of children.
