East Java Legislator Calls for Action Following Measles Outbreak in Sumenep
Surabaya, East Java – Dr. Benjamin Kristianto, a member of the East Java Regional People’s Representative Council (DPRD) from the Gerindra Faction, has expressed serious concern regarding the recent Exceptional Event (KLB) of measles in sumenep Regency. Dr. Kristianto attributes the outbreak primarily to low immunization coverage within the community, fueled by the spread of misinformation surrounding vaccines.
According to Dr. Kristianto, a key factor driving decreased immunization rates is parental fear stemming from unsubstantiated claims about vaccine side effects and concerns regarding halal certification. “Don’t hear hoaks!!!” he urged, emphasizing the importance of verifying data before accepting it as truth.
Dr.Kristianto outlined several immediate steps the government should take to contain the outbreak and prevent further spread. These include:
* Catch-Up Immunization: Implementing a rapid re-immunization program targeting children who have not completed their vaccination schedules.
* Focal Control Procedures: Applying targeted control measures in affected areas, including contact tracing, medication administration, isolation of confirmed cases, and immunization within a 20-house radius of infected individuals.
* Education and Early Detection: Launching a widespread public education campaign highlighting the benefits of measles immunization and the dangers of the disease, with active participation from village officials and local military personnel (Babinsa) in community outreach and symptom identification.
* Health Facility Preparedness: Ensuring that health facilities, especially Puskesmas (community health centers), have adequate isolation capacity and sufficient vaccine supplies to manage a potential surge in cases.He stressed the need for coordination between the Health office and all Puskesmas throughout East Java.
“The Health Office and Puskesmas must also ensure the availability of vaccines,” Dr. Kristianto stated.
