Paramilitary Forces Kill 53 Civilians in Darfur, Aid Group Reports
El-Fasher, Sudan โ – Sudanese paramilitary forces โhave killed 53 civilians in and around el-Fasher, the capital of North โDarfur, โDoctors Without Borders/Mรฉdecins Sans Frontiรจres (MSF) reported Tuesday. The killings occurred duringโ recent clashesโ between the Sudanese army and the Rapidโข Supportโฃ Forces (RSF), escalating a brutal conflict that threatens to overwhelm the already fragile humanitarian situation in the region.
The violence in El-Fasher โmarks a dangerous turnโข inโ Sudan’s year-long civil war, which erupted in April 2023 from tensions between the military and theโค RSF. The fightingโ has killed tens of thousands, displaced over 14 million,โฃ and driven partsโค of the country to the brink โof famine.โค El-Fasher,โค where approximately โฃ260,000 civiliansโ remain โtrapped after most of the โpopulation fled RSF attacks, is now a focal point of the escalatingโ crisis, with residents facing bothโฃ direct violence and โoutbreaks of disease, including cholera.
Theโข conflict began as open fighting in Khartoum and quickly โspread to other areas, including Darfur, a โregion alreadyโข scarred by โdecades of conflict. The United Nations and other aid groups have warned of aโฃ catastrophic humanitarian situation,โฃ hampered โby ongoing violence and limited access for aidโ delivery.
Beyondโ the immediate loss of life, the conflict has been characterized by widespread atrocities, including mass killings and rape. The International Criminal Courtโ is investigatingโ these incidents as potential war crimes andโฃ crimes againstโค humanity. The futureโ of El-Fasher, and the wider Darfur region, hangs โขin the balance as the fighting continues โwithโ no clear path to resolution.
