A child’s clubfoot may not heal on its own, but surgery is not the only solution.
Before considering surgery, several treatment methods can be employed, collectively known as the Ponseti method.
Treating Clubfoot Without Surgery
Cast Application
Cast application aims to restore the proper shape of the child’s feet.
Doctors will apply a series of casts that are adjusted to the baby’s foot growth, typically starting within the first two weeks of life.
after a week in a cast, the baby needs a doctor’s consultation for gentle manipulation and a cast change, with 5-7 casts used over several weeks or months.
Brace Usage
Once the baby’s feet are in the correct position, an orthopedic specialist will switch from casts to a brace, also called an orthotic.
This brace, made of iron and attached to special shoes, helps maintain the corrected foot position and prevent recurrence.
Initially, the brace is worn continuously for 24 hours for three months, then transitioned to nighttime wear for approximately three to five years.
