CDA Candidate Defends Party Leaderโฃ Amidst Discrimination โคClaims Ahead of โDutch Elections
The โฃHague – Karsten Klein, a candidate Member ofโค parliament for theโค Christian Democratic Appealโข (CDA), hasโ moved โto clarify โฃremarks โฃattributed to party leader Henri Bontenbal โregarding discrimination basedโฃ on religious grounds, just days before the Netherlands‘ House โof Representatives โelections. โฃKlein stated emphatically, “henri โฃBontenbal did โขnotโ say or meenโค that,” responding to suggestions Bontenbal implied discrimination was permissible if religiously motivated.
Theโ controversy stems from a News Hour interview last Monday featuring a gay student attendingโ a โขChristian school who felt unable to comeโข out.โ The segment highlighted a perceived conflict between โreligious freedom adn LGBTQ+ rights, with criticsโ interpreting Bontenbal’s comments as tacit acceptanceโ of a “don’t practice it” approach to homosexuality within faith-based schools. This has become a key โissue as โDutch voters prepare to head to the polls โnext week.
Klein, appearing on โฃthe radio program West Wakes Up Wednesday morning,โค acknowledged the tension between competing fundamentalโ rights. โ”These are conflicting fundamental โขrights,” he said, adding that theโข CDA has โhistorically fought for both freedom of education and specialโค education. “If a school takes โa religious position on homosexuality, I โขbeleive that schools shouldโ be given that space. Even if it โฃis โฃpainful.”
He stressed that the CDA remains committed to gay emancipation and gay rights,โค distancing the โparty from โthe situation presented in the News Hour segment.”It does not โคalter the fact thatโ CDA stands for gay emancipation and gay rights. When โคthings happen like the example of that boy in โฃ News Hour CDA โฃdistances itself from this. โฃbut it can be conflicting. I โขthink that is what henri Bontenbal alsoโ brought up during theโ Nieuwsuur interview.”
kleinโ further explained the CDA’s position centers on upholding freedom โฃofโฃ education, with minimal government interference and parental controlโ over โeducational choices. He โคaffirmed that discrimination based on gender โor sexual orientation is legally prohibited, stating, โค”Discrimination or โฃdisadvantaging people based on gender or sexual orientation is simply โขprohibited. Henri โBontenbal also โindicated โคthis andโค that is his personal โview.”
