Days after a powerful 8.8-magnitude earthquake struck Russia’s Far East, alarms are sounding over the condition of the strategically vital Rybachiy nuclear submarine base. The facility, home to some of Russia’s most advanced underwater vessels, was located perilously close to the seismic event’s epicenter.

Proximity to Epicenter Sparks Fears

The significant tremors that shook the Kamchatka Peninsula on Wednesday prompted tsunami warnings across several countries, including Japan and the United States. Rybachiy, a critical site for Russia’s naval power, is situated in Avacha Bay, just approximately 120 kilometers from where the earthquake originated.

This closeness has military experts and analysts on edge, fueling speculation about potential damage to the highly sensitive military installation. The base serves as the operational hub for Russia’s Pacific fleet, housing formidable vessels such as the ‘Alexander Nevsky’, ‘Vladimir Monomakh’, and the K-44 Ryazan submarine.
