New PBS Bioplastic Grades Demonstrate Industrial Viability,Poised for Circular Economy Impact
Schwarzheide,Germany – A newโค generation of polybutylene succinate (PBS) bioplastics is demonstrating โขsuccessful processing on existing industrial machinery, openingโ doors for โขwider adoption of sustainable materials in sectors currentlyโ reliant on polyethylene. Developed through the collaborative efforts of Gramร GmbH Plastic processing and the fraunhofer Institute for Applied Polymer Research IAP, initial products including a sports drinking bottle and closure have been successfully โขmanufactured using windโข forming and injection molding โขtechniques.
The breakthrough signifies a major step forward for the RUBIO Alliance โค- aโค network of 18 partners including businesses and research institutions focused โฃon establishing value chains forโ technical bioplastics in Central โGermany. PBS, โa bio-based and potentially recyclable material, is positioned as a key component in the future circular economy โof plastics, offering a viable option โขwith a desirable tactile quality and medium strength.
“As a bio-based and recyclable material in the near future, PBSโข will be a real game change on the market of bioplastics and play a โขcrucial roleโข in the circular economy of plastics,” โขexplains โDr.Jens Balko, head of the Processing center Biopolymere Schwarzheide at Fraunhofer IAP.โค “With its appealing feel and soft to medium-hard strength, โฃPBSโ is a real alternativeโค for products โin which polyethylene is stillโข used โฃtoday.”
The RUBIO Alliance, anchored in the Central German chemical triangle and the Berlin-Brandenburg โarea, aimsโ to โactively โคcontribute to the structural โฃchange occurring โขin former lignite regions. furtherโ research focuses onโ optimizing the efficient extraction of โsuccinic โฃacid, a โcrucial raw material in PBS synthesis, requiring continued โฃcollaborationโค and technological innovation.
Fraunhofer IAP will showcase its latest PBS developments at the K Messe in Dรผsseldorf, โฃOctober 8-15, 2025, at the Fraunhofer โคcommunityโข stand โin Hall โ7 / Stand SC05, exhibitingโฃ products demonstrating diverse industrialโ processingโ technologies.
