Supreme โCourt Delays Ruling on Bailโ for Activistsโฃ in Delhi Riotsโ Case
New Delhiโค – The Supreme Court today adjourned hearings for the bail petitions of Umar Khalid, Sharjeel imam, Meeran Haider, and Gulfisha Fatima, all accused in theโ Delhi riots “larger conspiracy” case, until September 19. The court’s decisionโฃ comes as the activists remain inโข custody โฃforโ over five years, facing charges under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) andโข the Indian Penal Code.
Theโฃ adjournment was prompted by Justice aravind Kumar’s indication that the benchโ had only received theโ case files late last night, at 2:30 AM, hindering their ability to proceed with the โขhearing. This โคcase centers on allegations that the four, prominent student activists who led protests against โthe citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in 2019-2020, were involved in formulating a “larger conspiracy” behind the communal violence that erupted in โDelhi in February 2020. Their continuedโฃ detention and the specifics of the โคalleged conspiracy remain central pointsโ of contention.
A benchโ comprised of Justice Aravind Kumar and justice NVโข Anjaria heard the matter. โSenior Advocatesโฃ Kapil Sibal and CU โSingh represented Khalid,Dr. Abhishek Manu โSinghvi appearedโ for Fatima, and Siddharth โขDave argued on behalf โof Imam.
The petitions challenge the Delhi High Court’s September 2nd ruling, which hadโ previously denied bail to the four activists. That decision was delivered by a division bench of Justicesโ Naveen chawla and โShalinder โฃKaur. The Supremeโฃ Court will revisit the arguments concerning the request of UAPA and the evidence presented linkingโ the activists to the riots when hearings resume.
