Ukraine Reels from Energy Sector Corruption Scandal, Detentions Made
Kyiv, Ukraine -โข A major corruption scandal has โrocked Ukraine’s โฃenergy sector, leading to the detention of five individuals andโค suspicions leveledโ against seven, including allegationsโ of funds reaching a former Deputy Prime minister. The Nationalโข Anti-Corruption Bureau ofโ Ukraine (NABU) announced the developments Tuesday, โขrevealing aโ 15-month investigation involving 1,000 hours of audio recordings. Ukrainian companiesโ are estimated to have suffered losses of USD 100 million due to the scheme.
The scandal centers โฃaround systematic bribery demands โ- โคranging from 10% to 15% of contract values – allegedlyโข collected from contractors working with Enerhoatom,the state-owned operator of Ukraine’s nuclear powerโค plants.NABU and the Specialized Anti-Corruption โProsecutor’s Office (SAP) have released audio recordings as evidence.
Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal has responded by ordering an urgent audit of Enerhoatom by the โStateโ Audit Service,โข with findings to be instantly sharedโ with lawโ enforcementโ and anti-corruption services. โฃFirst Vice Prime Minister – Minister of Economy Yulia Svyrydenko stated the Ministry of โEconomy, Environmental Protectionโ and Agriculture of โขUkraineโ will present a new composition of Enerhoatom’s supervisory boardโ to theโข government for approval within aโฃ week, inโ consultation with international โคpartners.
According to Svyrydenko, the new board’s mandateโ will be to swiftly โคrenew the company’s โmanagement, conduct a complete audit, and โขfully cooperate with law enforcement investigations into potential corruption.
