Joaquin Phoenix, Andrew Garfield โคJoin Growing Boycott of israeli โฃFilm Institutions
Jakarta – Hollywood stars Joaquin Phoenix and Andrew Garfield have addedโ their names toโข a growing list of film industry professionalsโ pledging toโข boycott institutions and companies perceived as supportingโ the Israeliโข government’sโฃ actions inโ Palestine. โThe commitment, organized by Film Workers for Palestine, now includes nearly 4,000 signatories as of Wednesday, September 10, 2025.
The open โletter,โค initially published on Monday, September 8, 2025, calls for โan endโข to involvement with entities thatโค “justify genocide and apartheid, and also partnering with the government whoโข did it.” Signatories are committing to not work with โorganizations โincluding the Jerusalem Film Festival, Haifa โInternational Film โขFestival,โ Docaviv, and TLVfest. the โคmovement draws inspiration from Filmmakers United Against Apartheid, established in 1987 andโฃ spearheaded by Jonathanโค Demme and Martin Scorsese.
Among the initial โ1,200 signatories were prominent directors Yorgosโ Lanthimos, Ava Duvernay, Adam โMcKay, and Joshuaโค Oppenheimer, alongside filmmakers Mike Leigh. additional notable names included Emma Stone,Olivia colman,ayo Edebiri,Lily Gladstone,Mark Ruffalo,Riz Ahmed,Tilda Swinton,Javier Bardem,and Josh O’Connor.
The listโ expanded significantly in the days following itsโค release, โฃadding Phoenix, garfield, Nicola Coughlan, Rooney mara, Elliot Page, Emma D’Arcy, and Guy Pearce. Jonathan Glazer, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, โFisher Stevens, Abbi Jacobson,โ Eric Andre, and Payal Kapadia โขalso joined the boycott.
Phoenix and Mara have previously demonstrated their support for Palestinian causes,โ serving as executive producers onโข the Venice Award-winning drama The Voice of Hind Rajab, a film focusing โon the โsituation inโ Gaza, and wearing Palestinian โคsupport pins at the festival.
Film Workers for โฃPalestine stated, “This is a moment of urgent crisis, when many governments actually support bloodshed in Gaza.We must do everything that โcan endโค the involvement in โthe endless โฃhorror.” The organization represents a broad spectrum of โคthe film and television industry, including Oscar, BAFTA, Emmy, and Palme d’Or winners.
