Salsaโ Legend Josรฉ Alberto Reveals Fania All Stars’ Missed Chance After 50 Years in Music
San Juan, Puerto Rico – After a remarkableโฃ half-century in music, salsa icon Josรฉโ Alberto “El Canario” is reflecting on hisโฃ career and aโ critical misstep โขbyโค teh legendary Fania All Stars: their failure to cultivate a new generation of stars to replace itsโ original lineup.โค In a โrecent interview, Alberto detailed how this lack of foresight ultimatelyโ led to the group’s decline, despiteโฃ a wealth of emerging โขtalent.
Alberto, celebrating his 50th โคartistic anniversary on November 26th at the Coca-Colaโ Music Hall, spoke candidly aboutโ not being โincluded in the Fania All โStars duringโค his rise โto prominence. However, he emphasizedโข this wasn’t a source ofโ bitterness. “He wasn’t forced, and he didn’t have the need,” Alberto explained. “The guy was involved with the greats,โข and it was an empire โคthat โhe managed, where artists like โHรฉctor Lavoe, like Ismael Miranda, like Cheo Feliciano, like Larry Harlow, like ray Barreto,โฃ like all these great โคartists,โฃ were capturing attention around the โworld.”
The โคcore of his assessment centers on Fania’s โฃinability to plan for the future.”That was the failureโ in part โof fania.Fania never created a replacement,” Alberto stated. “If itโฃ had created a replacement, Fania โAll Stars wouldโ haveโฃ existed asโค the first pigeon peas today.โฃ Because there have been talents who were born later and were superstars.” He cited โคa wave of artists who emerged after โthe โคoriginal All Stars – Frankie โRuiz, Laloโ Rodrรญguez,โ Gilberto Santa Rosa, Tito Nieves, Tony Vega, and Tito Rojas – as potential successors who were never givenโฃ the opportunity. “Many came who โcould have been Fania all Stars, butโ they weren’t.โค There was no suchโ vision of a future.”
Despite this, Alberto acknowledges the support he received from many figures within the salsa world, including Celia Cruz, Tito Puente, Andy Montaรฑez, Pete “El โconde” Rodrรญguez, and even Johnnyโ Pacheco, who later produced an โฃalbum with Alberto and toured with him. “And it is indeed so true โขthat I got toโค record with Pacheco andโค he came to produce me.Iโค got to accompany him with โmy orchestra and travel with him, so that you can see what life is. And I made an album in tribute to him,” he saeid, noting the irony of their eventualโ collaboration.
throughoutโฃ hisโ career,โ Alberto credits his enduring successโ to a ideology โof forgiveness andโค forward momentum, instilled by his mother: “my son, always move forward, never hate. Don’t hold a grudge.” he believes harboring negativity hindersโค emotional progress.
Now,reflecting on five decades in the industry,Alberto expresses contentment. “My career,a success. My life,โค a success. I am happy, the father of four children, married,โค I feel โgood,โค I am still in love โwith life, I like toโ live well and โI get used to everything, as long as it doesn’t hurt me,”โฃ he shared. โค
