Mexico to Build โlatin America‘s Most โฃPowerful โSupercomputer
MEXICO โCITY (AP) – Mexico announcedโ Wednesdayโ plans to construct a supercomputer projected to be the most powerful โคin Latin America,a move officials say will position the countryโค at the forefront of artificial intelligence development and considerably expand its data processing capabilities.
Theโ project, named “Coatlicue” after the Aztec goddess โฃofโ earth, is anticipated to be โฃseven times more powerful โthan the current regional โคleader located in Brazil, according to Josรฉ merino, head of the Telecommunications โคandโ Digital Change Agency. President Claudia Sheinbaum โrevealed the initiativeโ during herโ daily pressโข conference, stating construction is slated toโค begin next year,โ though a specific location remainsโ undecided.
This investment reflects a growing global race toโข harness the potentialโ of AI, with nations increasingly โฃrecognizing supercomputing power as critical infrastructure. Currently, Mexico’s most powerful supercomputer operatesโ at โค2.3 petaflops – one quadrillion operationsโค per second. Coatlicue is โprojected to achieve aโ capacity of โข314 petaflops, enabling โadvancements in fields likeโ climate modeling,โ scientific research, and dataโค analysis.
“It is goingโ to allow Mexico toโค fully getโค in on the use of artificial intelligenceโข andโฃ the processing of dataโค that today we don’t haveโฃ the capacity to do,” Sheinbaum, an โacademic and climate scientist, said.โ
