Keir Starmer, leader of the UK Labour Party, has reiterated his stance that Palestinian statehood is an “inalienable right,” but has not committed to a specific timeline for recognition. He has stated that the UK will recognize Palestine “at a time most conducive to the prospects of peace.”
This position was echoed by Shadow Minister for the Middle East, Wayne David, who commented on the recognition of Palestine by other nations. “I know many countries around the world have already done this,” David said. “To be frank, to be candid, it hasn’t stopped the appalling scenes that we’re talking about this morning.”
David emphasized the strategic importance of the current moment, stating, “So we’ve got to use this moment – you can only do it once. Use it in a way that gets the breakthrough that we need. And the U.S. is really crucial in that.”
