Tennessee โฃVoters Head to Polls in Closely Watched Special Election
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Tennessee votersโค are casting ballots Tuesday inโ a special election to fill โขthe vacant seat in the state’s โ5th Congressional District, a contest viewed โคas an early indicator of political โคmomentum heading into the 2024 election cycle. The race pits โRepublican Kurt Van Epps against Democratโข Keeda Haynes, and has drawn national attention amid โconcerns โคabout former โฃPresident Trump’s approvalโค ratings and economic โขdissatisfaction.
The electionโค was triggered by the expulsion of former Representative Andy Oglesโค earlier โthis โขyear. Democrats seeโฃ a potential โขpossibility to narrow the gap in a traditionally conservative district, โsignaling โa โคshift in โขthe political landscape. โRepublicans, though, remain confident in their ability to defend the seat.
Early voting began during Thanksgiving week, raising concerns about potential turnout challenges. Former โPresident Trump held a virtual rally in November to support van Epps, a former state general services commissioner and โArmyโ helicopter pilot.
The campaign โฃhas been marked by sharp attacks. Republicans have highlighted past comments made by Haynes, including โคher self-description as a “radical,” claims โฃof “bullying” immigration โคagents and state police officers, โand past criticisms of Nashville, where she oncโฃ stated,โข “I hate this city.” Haynes has largely responded by focusing on cost of living issues and clarifying herโ visionโฃ forโ nashville as a place “where working people can thrive.”
Haynes, a self-proclaimed “pissed-off social worker,” has positioned herself as โa contrast to Van Epps on key policy issues, condemning Trump’s tariffs and โtax cut legislation, and criticizing Republicans’ initial reluctance to release files related to โฃsex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Van Eppsโ initially opposed a House โฃvote to compel the โฃJustice Department to โฃdisclose moreโข Epstein documents, but laterโ changed his position to align with President Trump after the president endorsed the measure.
Meanwhile, Democratic โallies have attempted to siphon support from Van Epps โขby โencouraging conservativeโค voters to back autonomous candidate Jon Thorp, through mailers funded by Yourโค Community PAC, which has spent โover $16 million supporting Democratic candidates nationwide since last year.
