Erdoฤan Engages โคin diplomatic Push at G-20, Focusing on Climate Action and Regional Stability
RIO DE โฃJANEIRO, Brazil โข – Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoฤanโ conducted a series of bilateral meetings with global leaders at the G-20 summitโ in Rio de Janeiro, addressing issues ranging from climateโ change mitigation to regional conflicts and economic partnerships. The discussions โunderscored Tรผrkiye‘s commitment to multilateralism and its role as a key mediator in international disputes.
The meetings come asโ globalโค challenges intensify, from the accelerating impacts of climate change to escalating geopolitical tensions. Erdoฤan’s focus on โขpractical action and strengthened ties signals Tรผrkiye’s intent โฃto play a proactive โrole in addressing these issues, โparticularly withinโข the context of the Global South. The outcomes of these talks could influence upcoming โinternational agendas, including preparations for COP31 and ongoing reconciliation efforts in the Horn of Africa.
During a meeting withโข australianโฃ Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, Erdoฤanโฃ discussedโค preparations for COP31, which Australia aims toโค host in โค2026. He stated that โAustralia intends toโ prioritize Pacific interests and that the summit will โค”accelerate practical action and investment” to maintain safer global temperatures.
Erdoฤan also participated in a meeting with leaders from the MIKTA platform -โ comprising Tรผrkiye, Mexico, Indonesia, South Korea, and Australia – on the summit’s sidelines. โคHe wasโ accompanied by Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, Communications directorโข Burhanettin โฃDuran, Chief Foreign Policy Adviser Akif รaฤatayโ Kฤฑlฤฑรง, and other โฃsenior officials throughout the engagements.
A meaningful portionโข of Erdoฤan’s diplomatic efforts centered โฃon regional stability, particularly concerning โขthe โrelationship between Ethiopia andโฃ Somalia. In a meeting withโฃ Ethiopian Prime Minister โขAbiy Ahmed, Erdoฤan emphasized the importance of expanding โฃbilateral ties, especially โขinโ trade, and expressed optimism for deepened cooperation. He also highlighted the crucial role of strengthening the reconciliation process between ethiopia and Somalia, builtโ upon the foundationโ of lastโข year’sโ Ankaraโค Declaration.
The โankara Declaration, brokeredโฃ by Tรผrkiye inโฃ December,โ followed a โฃperiod of heightened tensions sparked by Ethiopia’s agreement with Somaliland granting access โto โthe red Sea โขport of Berbera in exchange for โคdiplomatic recognition – a move Somaliaโข considered a violation โฃof its sovereignty. Erdoฤan stressed that progress madeโ through the Ankara Declaration should โserve “a positive example” for โขresolving otherโ regional disputes.
