2026 Winter Olympics: Canada Advances Amidst Controversial Czech Hockey Call

A controversial call during a quarterfinal hockey match at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan has ignited a dispute, with the Czech Republic’s coach alleging preferential treatment for Canada. The incident occurred late in the third period of the Canada-Czechia game, with the score tied 2-2, when Czechia took the lead with what appeared to be six players on the ice.

Video footage circulating online shows multiple Czech players near the bench during the play, with at least one actively involved in the game despite seemingly intending to make a line change. Despite the apparent violation of the “too many men on the ice” rule, officials did not penalize the Czech team. Canada subsequently scored to tie the game and ultimately won in overtime, securing a spot in the semifinals.

Radim Rulik, the Czech Republic’s coach, voiced his frustration after the game, suggesting that officials are hesitant to call penalties against Canada, a traditional powerhouse in international hockey. “I have the impression that everyone is afraid to call a penalty against Canada,” Rulik stated. “We were practically playing against six players. I don’t want to make excuses, and no one is obliged to agree with me, but the video proves me right. From this point of view, this tournament is not fair… The guys deserved impeccable refereeing. They always admit afterwards that we were right, but nothing ever changes.”

The 2026 Winter Olympics are being co-hosted by Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy, from February 6th to February 22nd. This marks the first time Milan will host the Olympic Winter Games, having previously bid unsuccessfully in 1908, and 2000. Cortina d’Ampezzo previously hosted the Winter Olympics in 1956 and was originally slated to host in 1944, before those games were cancelled due to World War II. Approximately 2,900 athletes are participating in 116 events across eight sports.

Canada’s team has already secured four gold, four silver, and six bronze medals at the Milano Cortina 2026 games. The Canadian men’s hockey team is aiming to add to that medal count, with the semifinals scheduled to take place on February 18th. According to the Olympic schedule, Canada was slated to play Czechia on February 18th at 07:40. The Swedish, Czech, and Swiss teams had already qualified for the quarterfinals prior to the Canada-Czechia match.

As of February 19th, 2026, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the Italian Olympic Committee (CONI) have not issued any statements regarding the officiating controversy. No formal protest has been publicly announced by the Czech delegation.
