Valladolid, Spain – Mexican international striker JJ Macías will begin training with Real Valladolid’s youth academy, the club announced. This move comes as Macías, who previously announced his retirement from professional football in February 2025 due to a series of debilitating injuries, seeks to resume his career.
Macías, 25, will join the “promesas” (youth team) until the first team returns from their training camp in Chile. The club stated that “different medical processes stopped a promising career that will seek to resume work in the annexes.” He is expected to start training with the youth squad on Thursday.
The promising career of the Mexican forward was significantly hampered by injuries, notably two anterior cruciate ligament tears suffered in 2022 while playing for Chivas. These injuries led to extended periods away from the field. His move to santos Laguna in 2024 did not improve his situation, as persistent physical discomfort limited him to just five appearances. On February 11, Santos Laguna terminated his contract due to these ongoing injuries, and Fox Sports confirmed his decision to step away from the sport at that time.
Macías’s last official match appearance was on January 20, 2025, during the second matchday of the Clausura 2025 tournament, where Santos Laguna faced Pachuca. in that game, Macías scored the lone goal for his team in a 2-1 loss.
This new prospect with Real Valladolid marks a return to Spain for Macías, who previously played eight games for Getafe in August 2021, spending only one semester in Spanish football.
