Sheridanโ Gains Second Local Authority Nomination for Presidential Run
Social Democrats TD Gareth Sheridan has secured a nomination from a second local authority in his bid for the irish presidency, according to reporting โฃby The โฃIrish Times. Following a nominationโฃ from Fingal County Council, Sheridan receivedโ support from Dรบn laoghaire-Rathdown County Council today.
This brings the number of confirmed candidates to four, including โSinn Fรฉin’s Mary Lou McDonald, autonomous Peter Casey, and Fianna Fรกil’s Jim Gavin.
Sheridan requires nominations โคfromโ four โฃlocal authorities or 20 Oireachtas members to โformally enter โthe presidential โrace. โคHe previously ran โฃfor the presidency in 2011.โค The election is scheduled toโ take placeโ on [Date of Election – not provided in source].
The news comes amid ongoing controversies โfor other โฃpolitical figures. Social Democrats TD Eoin Hayes, recently returned from suspension, remains a party member despite a past โฃ”blackface” incident – wearingโค brown make-up while dressed as โคBarack Obama at a Halloween party 16 yearsโฃ ago when he โขwas โขpresident of the Students’ โUnion in Universityโฃ College Cork. Hayes issued โan apology on Monday. He was previously โsuspended last December โfor providing misleading โinformation regarding the โฃsale of shares in Palantir, a company linked toโ the Israeli military,โข but wasโ readmitted โขto the parliamentary party over the summer.
Separately, The Irish Times reported that Jim โgavin, the Fianna Fรกil presidential candidateโ and former Dublin Gaelic football manager, received an average of โฌ5,000 a year in expenses during his tenure with the Dublinโ team,โค which spanned fromโข 2012 to 2019 and โsaw the โคteam achieve a record five All-Ireland titles in a row. Fianna Fรกil statedโ theโค expenses were fullyโ vouched and in line with GAA and public service rates.
