Trump Vows to Pardon Former Honduran president Hernandez
TEGUCIGALPA, HONDURAS – Formerโ U.S. President Donald Trump has announced his intention to pardon Juan Orlando Hernรกndez, the former โpresident of Honduras, shouldโ he be re-elected in November. The pledge came asโค Trump voiced supportโค for Honduran opposition candidate Tito Asfura ahead of the country’s upcomingโ elections.
Hernรกndez, who served as Honduras’ โขpresident from 2014 to 2022, was arrested in the โUnited States in 2022โข and convicted in March 2024 on charges of drug โtrafficking andโ weapons offenses. He maintained his innocence throughout the trial, โclaimingโฃ he foughtโ against โขdrug cartels during his presidency. Trump’s offer of a pardon represents a significantโ intervention in Honduran politics and a potential reversalโค of the U.S. legal proceedings against Hernรกndez.
The move underscores Trump’s continued focus onโข Latin American policy and his โwillingness to challenge established diplomatic and legal norms. It alsoโ comes amid heightened U.S. military presence in the Caribbean, ostensibly to counter drug trafficking, โincluding the deploymentโ of the Navy’s moast advancedโฃ aircraft carrier, the USS Gerald R.โค Ford. While Trump has not ruled out further action against Venezuela regarding alleged drug trafficking, he has also indicated openness to dialog with President Nicolรกs Maduro.
Trump’s supportโ for Asfura, a candidate positioning himself againstโ leftist politicalโค forces in Honduras, was publicly voiced on social media. Argentine President Javier Milei, a self-described โadmirer of Trump, also expressed support for Asfura, stating he represents opposition to “leftist tyrants”โ in Honduras.
Theโค current honduran President, Xiomara Castro, has maintained a pragmatic relationship with the U.S.management despite her leftist leanings, continuingโฃ extradition treaties and military cooperation. Honduras has also beenโ involved in theโ deportation of its citizens from the โU.S.โฃ and has served as a transit point for โdeported Venezuelans.
