PARIS – Austrian doubles teams are making a strong showing at the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Paris, with Alexander Erler already securing a quarter-final berth and Lucas Miedler advancing to the round of 16 on Wednesday.
Erler, partnering with American Robert Galloway, upset the seventh-seeded Italian duo of Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori 7-6(5), 7-5. Miedler and his Portuguese teammate, francisco Cabral, also secured a victory, defeating Nuno Borges and Tomas Machac 6-3, 7-6.
Miedler/Cabral’s next challenge will be a highly anticipated match against Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos, a pairing that has already clinched the second-best ranking in this year’s ATP Race, with implications for qualification for the French Open and US Open.
“After the intensive week in Vienna, it was a very solid start,” said Miedler. “In the second set we made it tighter than it should have been, but overall I’m very happy with the performance.”
Sinner advances in Singles
Meanwhile, in the singles competition, Jannik Sinner continued his pursuit of the world No. 1 ranking with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Zizou Bergs.
Sinner needs to win the Paris tournament to surpass carlos Alcaraz and claim the year-end No. 1 position.
