Melbourne, Victoria – November 27, 2023 – Nathan Buckley has emerged as the frontrunner in the Melbourne Demons‘ search for a new senior coach, following the departure of Simon Goodwin in September. The club is currently undertaking a thorough recruitment process, with Buckley publicly acknowledging his interest in the role.
Buckley, who coached Collingwood from 2012 to 2021, leading the Magpies to a Grand Final appearance in 2018, stated last week on SEN radio that he would consider a call from Melbourne, describing the opportunity as “compelling.” However, he emphasized the need for careful consideration before re-entering the high-pressure surroundings of AFL coaching.
Speaking again on SEN radio on Monday, Buckley reiterated his cautious approach, stating he wouldn’t be providing a running commentary on the Demons’ selection process. “I’ve been out of coaching for a little bit longer, so I know exactly were they’re at,” Buckley said.He further clarified his position, stating, “I’m still working out weather I’m there or whether I’m in. So I’m well and truly on the fence.”
Buckley dismissed the notion of being the presumptive candidate as “irrelevant,” maintaining his focus on evaluating the opportunity. The Melbourne Demons finished 16th in the 2023 AFL season with a 7-15 record, prompting the search for a new coach to revitalize the team.
